The Palazzo was inhabited by the Filonardi family until the nineteenth century. In 1912 it became the home of a convent of cloistered Benedictine nuns, who had fled from Palazzo Simoncelli because of a fire.
You enter the Palazzo grounds through a stone portal in Piazza San Pietro which leads to a courtyard, where you can admire another magnificent portal featuring a rounded arch on which are carved angels with sheaves of wheat and flowers and an inscription. The archway seems to be the work of Sangallo but tradition attributes it to the art of Vignola. The magnificent Hall of Representation (Salone di Rappresentanza), located on the first floor of the building, is also considered to be the work of the artist Vignola, and features antique floor tiles engraved with the symbols of the noble families Farnese and Della Rovere, who were the patrons of Cardinal Filonardi. The wonderful Church of St. Peter of Spain is nearby.
The property for sale is a wing of the Palazzo that was built in 1700 by the family Filonardi for accommodating as guests the Roman prelates and dignitaries of the Church, who, especially in the summer months, travelled to Boville Ernica to escape the heat of Rome. The construction of the wing was entrusted entirely to artists from the Vatican as proved by the two "signature stamps" affixed on top of the central fireplace. The extraordinary beauty of these original colours that have survived the centuries is attested to by old documentation.
Piazza San Pietro, then the courtyard of the palace, is now a garden, and as there is no through-traffic, provides a tranquil haven where those fortunate enough to live in these buildings can relax and socialise with one another.
This historic 140 sq.mt. apartment combines romance and practicality, with the frescoed splendour of its upper floor, and the modern comfort of its open plan lower floor. It is in excellent condition, suitable for immediate occupancy.
On the upper floor, there is the fine salon with its blue and cream ceiling and historic stone fireplace; another large room with a fine painted ceiling (currently a kitchen dining room); a third large painted room (currently a bedroom, but could readily be a large sitting room, family room or study); and, perhaps the jewel of the whole building, an incredible master bedroom suite. Painted and stuccoed in blue and white and gold, the master bedroom has an ornate dressing area, a separate, curtained alcove for the master bed; and a matching blue and gold ensuite bathroom behind a hidden door.
A stairway, currently used to display art and accessible both from the salon and directly from the main entrance hall of the building, leads to the family entertaining area. This is largely open plan, with another kitchen (which could either become the main kitchen, or remain as a bar and entertaining area), much seating, a study area, TV etc. At the far end, there are several walk-in storage rooms and another bathroom. It would be easy to cut off the very far end of the open plan area to create a new second bedroom, with the existing bathroom ensuite.
The property is accessible by car and there is adjacent parking available.
