Location and area:
A wide and sheltered bay with a long sandy beach fringed by nice houses in traditional basque architecture with the beautiful scenery of the Pyrenees as a backdrop. This is Saint Jean de Luz, but not only this.
The place is also very endearing for its mix of heritage, working fishing harbour, chic boutiques and mouth watering restaurants. The architecture, although ranging from the XVIIth century ship owners houses in Ciboure to Basque Art Deco mansions up the 2 hills overlooking the bay provides pleasant looks of unity. It is not a purpose-built resort and its narrow streets are packed with history since the fishing harbour of Ciboure (the ancient core of the town) was founded in the XVIIth Century by Dutch fishermen and the wedding of King Louis XIV and the Spanish infanta Marie Thérèse was celebrated here in 1660.
The harbour is also the mouth of the Nivelle river along which lie no less than 2 Golf courses with nice views on the Pyrenees. Affluent villas in traditional architecture and basque colours (red 'oxen blood', green and blue) clinging to the hill of Ciboure and overlooking the Bay from their green and lush parks planted with hydrangea, one of the area's signature, really have a Atlantic Riviera look.
Leaving the stylish Ciboure and its winding leafy avenues one arrives in Socoa leisure harbour with its sailing schools, its row of waterfront restaurants and the XVIIth Fort of Socoa, standing guard on the Bay. Then the road continues to Hendaye, last French town before the Spanish border, on the scenic road justly called "La Corniche Basque" in that it offers dramatic and tormented views on the Ocean. On the other side of the bay the sought-after districts of Le Lac, Sainte Barbe and Chokoan are a succession of affluent villas in traditional basque architecture, along calm avenues winding up a hill overlooking the Ocean on one side and the Pyrenees on the other side. This is a very nice place to wander, jogg or cycle! Further north 4 other smaller beaches set into coves lead to the typical village of Guéthary.
Anglet is ideally located at Biarritz' doors and neighbour to Bayonne, capital city of the basque region. It is also bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and by the Adour River on the other side. It boasts about 5 km of golden sand divided in 11 beaches renowned for surfing.
