Ardnacarrig House has remained relatively anonymous during its lifetime due largely to its extensive well planted grounds which are bounded to the south east by the river Bandon. It was built in the distinctive Italianate style which was typical of this era between 1802 and c. 1860. It is best identified by the use of prominently bracketed cornice tower or towers with arched windows.
The current owners have lavished time, money and exacting attention to detail on Ardnacarrig House for the last approx. 30 years. It has undergone two extensive renovations and refurbishments by them, the first of which took place C. 1989 and the most recent in 2010. This level of care, attention and genuine love of the property has resulted in the preservation and improvement of one of Cork's most captivating period homes. The sympathetic use of heritage colours in fabric and wall paper and many commissioned pieces ensure the property looks exactly as a stately Period home should look like today.
Access is via Watergate Street, the recessed access point opens its wrought iron electric gates to allow access where you will notice a pretty gate lodge which is in fine fettle. The gate lodge was built C. 1880 and oozes period features such as gable fronted canted bay window, ornate timber carved bargeboards and a Flemish redbrick external finish. The Gate Lodge is an appropriate prelude to the main residence.
From here, you follow the gradual driveway which unfolds gently to the main residence all the while immaculately landscaped hedging, trees and bushes guide you to the main house. Along the way you will pass a detached bungalow with detached fuel store, boiler house and a derelict cottage which has its own road frontage access point. Moving up the driveway you begin to glimpses the property between the mature planting. A sense that you are within the grounds of a really special property is evident.
Upon reaching the main parking area you can now begin to take in this property's full beauty. You will see that accommodation is spread out over three storey's, it is thought to have had a single storey extension on its southerly elevation after its original construction, which once took the form of a modest sized ballroom, now a stunning kitchen/dining/living room with feature leaded glass ceiling skylight. Other distinguishing external features include the tower with arched windows and an arched carriageway access point leading into the rear coach yard where you will find original stables, hay loft and a fuel store.
Making your way inside the gable single storey entrance porch, a series of hallways allow access to the main reception rooms of which there are four. Each one has a notable character with attention to detail, from the granite step floors, to the walls and ceilings. A considered approach has been taken in the recent refurbishment and the finishes are exceptional. The living space of Ardnacarrig House is generous yet practical, each room is full of charm and brimming with individuality.
The bedroom accommodation much like the living space is incredibly well finished, from here you can enjoy a bird's eye view of the front lawn, while the tower which is easily accessed off the landing hallway allows panoramic views of the grounds and beyond. The extremely high quality of décor is evident throughout.
Ardnacarrig House also provides a self-contained garden level apartment. This space can be accessed both internally and externally. It is currently laid out as a one bedroom apartment with garden access.
Stepping into the grounds leaves you spoilt for choice, there is a selection of outdoor spaces to be enjoyed. Closest to the main residence you will find a large terrace once a conservatory off the kitchen/dining/living room with steps leading down to the level lawn which is home to a calming pond with fountain and further seating areas. A series of gravel pathways lead to magical garden spaces each, with its own selection of mature hedging towering trees and an array of carefully chosen plant life. The gardens are meticulously well maintained throughout the grounds. The River Bandon bounds the property and offer an opportunity to cast out your fishing rod and relax. This lower section is tree lined to provide extra privacy. On the north east elevation you will find an easily navigated pathway which brings you to a large relatively level lawn, ideal for ball games and further grounds which taper down towards the River Bandon, all bounded by an old stone wall.
