Varna is the third largest city in the country after Sofia and Plovdiv, and the biggest Bulgarian city on Black Sea. Often referred as “The Sea Capital” or “The Summer Capital” of the country, Varna has been very important, administrative, cultural, economic, tourist and military center throughout the modern Bulgarian history and remains such to this day. A true paradise for the Bulgarian Archeology, the ancient findings suggest, human presence as early as 100 000 BC. Further evidence traces the history of the settlement from the conquest of Alexander the Great, throughout Roman and Byzantine rule, the Medieval ages, the Turkish yolk, till modern days. The treasures, discovered in the Varna Necropolis, is considered the oldest gold treasure in the world.

Varna has a superb infrastructural development being the home of the Bulgarian Navy. The city has its own airport, railroad (the first ever in the country is the Ruse-Varna railroad) and biggest sea port on the West coast of the Black Sea, including shipyards and a naval base.

The city has established itself as an industrial center before WW2, with a lot of factories built after 1945, which facilities are renovated and still in use by companies with domestic and foreign investments. Industrial fishing is still a considerable part of the city economy and occupation.

As a tourist and cultural destination, Varna has a lot to offer. The city is a current candidate for the European Capital in 2019 and former “European Youths Capital”. As well as industry, the city is home to the traditional arts.
