Kötschach-Mauthen

Kötschach-Mauthen is a small town at the head of the Gailtal and at the entrance to the Lesachtal which was designated as Europe's most beautiful and unspoilt vallaey. The town was established around 200B.C. and a rock inscription from this time still exists in Würmlach, a district of Kötschach. A Roman road ran over the Plöckenpass from Italy to a Roman settlement above the present town.

Today the town still offers easy access to Italy and the area of the Ost Tirol. There is a good road infrastructure to Lienz, along the Gailtal to Villach and along the Lesachtal. The Gailtaler railway terminates at Kötschach and from there regular services run down the valley to Villach from where connections for trains to the rest of Europe can be made.

Kötschach offers a wide range of sporting facilities including mountain hiking, less strenuous walking in the valleys, cycling, downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoe walking, fly fishing and swimming. Many of the hotels offer Wellness holidays and the town is renowned for its number and quality of restaurants. There is the Loncium brewery and a very interesting museum in the Rathaus, town hall that recalls the First World War and the local mountain warfare.
