The Town of Fontechiari
Fontechiari is a small picturesque hilltop town in the Ciociaria area of Lazio. Bordered by the towns of Arpino, Vicalvi and Posta Fibreno, it really is a hidden gem of the beautiful Comino Valley. Named Fontechiari - or clear fountain - because of the abundance of fresh water springs that naturally occur in this area. The town has a long history and was once inhabited by the Romans.
The ancient medieval settlement of Fontechiari was surrounded by high stone walls, some of which are still intact today. At one stone archway into the old town centre, a tower built by the medieval Boncompagni Lords still stands.
Points of interest include:
- The Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Fratelli, with a 13th century statue of Christ
- The Church of Saints Giovanni Battista and Evangelista
- The Church of Sant'Anna with fine 14th century frescoes
- Grottos of Sant' Onofrio
- A cemetery of Napoleonic times (early 19th century)
- Medieval tower
