Niguelas is a village which reveals charm in every corner. Its location is extremely privileged - it is the highest municipality in the Valle de Lecrín. The 3000-metre-high Pico del Caballo mountain impresses visitors with its grandeur - in winter it is capped with snow, while in summer or on a clear day, it offers view down to the sea. The origins of the village date from the Muslim era when Niguelas was first recognised as a farm.
This alpujarreño town has a number of historic water, flour and olive oil mills. One of these, the 15th-century Laerillas oil mill, is one of the oldest olive oil mills in the country and has been converted into a museum of traditional agriculture.
The patron saints fiesta in Niguelas is celebrated with a pilgrimage in April, in honour of San Marcos.

THE LECRIN VALLEY

Perfect as a holiday destination, its away from the hustle and bustle of the coast, yet within easy reach, and only a short distance to the city of Granada. .According to Wikipedia: Lecrín is derived from the Arabic Iqlim, meaning gateway: this refers to a small area of land situated between the villages of Mondújar and Talará, which controlled the access to the vast coastal areas of sugar production in Moorish times. However, the other school of thought is that El Valle de Lecrin actually means Valley of Happiness and this is how the residents like to think of it!
The Sierra Nevada is a dramatic, rugged and extensive mountain range, the highest in Europe after the Alps and the most significant section of the Cordillera Penibética. The protected area encompasses 86,208ha of torrential rivers, sheer-sided gorges, stony scree slopes, glacial lakes between snowy summits and, in the foothills of the Alpujarras, cultivated terraces of almond trees and vegetables. Popular activities in the region include skiing, hiking, mountain biking and summer camps. One can simply travel and discover its fauna and flora, see lagoons and have an adventure in this vast area of land.
GRANADA & BEACHES
Ski in the morning and sunbathe on the beach in the afternoon!
If you are coming from the city, or the ski slopes, Salobreña beaches are the closest and so a good choice if you are on a day trip. You can actually see the snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada from Playa del Pennon.
Driving times are about 1 hour 15 from Malaga (with the newly completed motorway), 35 mins from Granada airport, 20 minutes to Granada city and 25 minutes to the Costa Tropical.
