The pre-Roman peoples who resided in that area belonged to the Ligurian Statielli group.
In Roman times, the territory was crossed by two major roads: the Via Aemilia Scauria, from Vada Sabatia (Vado Ligure) to Derthonam (Tortona), for a short distance, and the road that leads from Aquae Statiellae (Acqui Terme) to Forum Fulvii (Villa del Foro, today suburb of Alexandria) with a broad pattern along the direction north - south, over time transformed in the current State Road No. 30 of the Bormida Valley.
Numerous Roman era findings indicate the settlements of rural type and cremation burials, now stored in the Archaeological Museum of Acqui Terme. The place name "Cassine" comes from the name "ad Cassinas" indicating the presence of "cassi", namely stables or complex of stables with the housing, or farms with cows' barn.
