About S'Arraco
S'Arracó is a small village with the majority of houses on either side of the road that runs between the Village of Andratx and San Telmo (Sant Elm). S'Arracó is located in a delightful and lush valley blessed with the protection of the near-by mountains cushioning the area from northerly winter winds or salt leaden westerlies. The central feature of the village is its church, built by Antoni Ferrandell Verí from 1704, known as Sant Crist chapel. A little later, in 1742, the church was built which encouraged the growth of the village. When a bridge was erected over the torrent of Sa Capella and more importantly a road was constructed to ease communication with Palma, commerce increased and the population expanded. Today around 1,100 people are resident in S'Arracó. During the 17th century several families migrated to France, for commercial and trade pursuits and many of the fine houses in S'Arracó were built by returning "arraconers" having wealth from better days in France. Today the area attracts more than its share of foreign residents from France and surprisingly the United States. The village is still very original and seems far removed from any sort of tourism, one of the reasons it became a magnet to a significant number of artists. A second reason being the beautiful valleys and coastal landscapes in the immediate area. The main street of S'Arracó hosts 3 restaurants, a tapas bar, a popular bar and meeting place, a bank and a general store. A fascinating feature of the village church is its striking clock. It strikes the hour 5 minutes before time to give the villagers an opportunity to concentrate on the number of chimes to follow - on the precise hour. August each year is fiesta time during which the sleepy village is filled with music and celebrations. Andratx Village and the harbour of Puerto Andratx are less than 10 minutes by car and the picturesque fishing village of San Telmo is 4 minutes by car.
