Area & surroundings
Calvia village is located just south of the mountain range that runs along the entire length of the west coast of the island and therefore enjoys milder and sunnier winters than experienced by the other areas sharing this advantageous geographic position in the south west. Calvia Village was founded in 1249 and had then less than 100 inhabitants. The village is still a genuine Mallorcan village retaining most of its old world charm. Although the administrative centre of a very valuable sector of the island's tourist industry is located in the village, covering an area between the western suburbs of Palma westward to the administrative region of Andratx, only the rather grand and majestic town hall hints of its regional importance.Calvia village is dominated by the church of Sant Joan Baptista, an imposing church built in the 19th century on the site of the 13th century original. The entrance to the church looks across the village, the terraces of almond and carob trees, soft countryside and the mountains beyond. The present population of Calvia (year 2008) is under 3,000 and the village is conveniently located just 15 minutes west of Palma and 10 minutes from the beaches of Palmanova and Puerto Portals. There are several boating marinas within a 15 minute drive including the Club de Mar in Palma, the marina at Puerto Portals, the new and exciting Port Adriano Marina - currently under construction and designed by Philippe Starck - and the marina of Santa Ponsa. There are several golf courses in the area, namely the Royal Bendinat Golf Course, the 3 Santa Ponsa Golf Courses and the Poniente Golf Course.The village has a modern sports centre incorporating an Olympic size swimming pool for the use of people living in the area and the village hosts both Mallorquin and international restaurants. Travelling from Palma, Calvia village is en-route to the picturesque village of Es Capdellà, the commencement of the pretty interior road to Andratx. Also at Es Capdellà the road is signposted to the hilltop village of Galilea via a delightful valley before a winding uphill drive enjoying truly spectacular views over the south of Mallorca.
