The Area: MIRANDA DO CORVO: ( 10 minutes by car). The Framed by densely wooded mountains, the market town of Miranda do Corvo has a remote history, although its ancient castle, conquered by the Moors in 1116, has almost completely disappeared and only the bell tower and cistern still remain. The town has a beautiful church situated on a hill overlooking the area. A large "Rio de Janeiro"-type statue of Jesus also looks out over the town. There is a weekly market selling fresh local produce on Wednesdays. The traditional speciality of Miranda do Corvo is chanfana (a sort of goat stew), which is thought to have been created at the monastery of Semide. Local handicrafts include works in lace, a tradition also born at the monastery, and the "Almalaguês weaving", woven and embroidered cotton fabric which is used to make tapestries and bedspreads.

PENELA: ( 10 minutes by car). This medieval town of with its 11th century castle is located 10kms to the north-west of Miranda do Corvo. The Castle of Penela is a Listed Monument. Its construction started in the 11th century, although what you can see of the Castle these days only goes back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Inside is the Church of St Michael, which was originally built in the 12th century. A short drive from Penela into the Serra do Espinhal can be found the Natural Dams of Louçainha. The freshness, the green hillside scenery, the serenity and peace of this place, make it one of the most attractive natural areas in the Municipality. Here, you will find natural pools, a picnic area and a panoramic restaurant. There is a weekly farmers market in Penela on Thursday.

COIMBRA:( 25 minutes by car) University town and former Capital City of Portugal is 25 minutes´drive to the north. In terms of historic significance and romantic beauty, Coimbra is second only to Lisbon and Oporto. Its ancient buildings cling to the side of the hill that rises above the curves of the river Mondego, the ornate buildings of the famous University of Coimbra are its crowning glory. Coimbra has much else to offer the visitor not least an array of medieval churches. Accessing the old part of the city through the Arco de Almedina, we find two cathedrals known as Se Velha (old) and Se Nova (new) referring to their respective ages, and though the 'new' one dates back to the 17th century its senior was founded in 1170.
