• Location
Benitachell is a municipality in Alicante province. Its municipal boundaries enclose Abiar, Alcázar, Calistros, Cumbre del Sol, La Font, Les Fonts and Lluca. Poble Nou de Benitachell borders the municipal boundaries of Javea andTeulada- Moraira. Benitachell is a tranquil and picturesque village, originally an Arab outpost, with a stunning coastline nearby, which is formed by a succession of cliffs of more than a 100m high that descend vertically into the sea. A charming Spanish village between Teulada and Javea, Benitachell has become very popular as a place to live all year round for many foreigners. Although just five minutes drive to the beach at either Moraira or Javea, it provides the best of both worlds for those wanting a more peaceful holiday. Several urbanisations surround the old town, the largest of which - Cumbre del Sol, has spectacular views over the sea, its own little beach, plus modern supermarkets and banks. Benitachell / Poble Nou de Benitatxell can be accessed via the AP-7 Mediterranean Dual Carriageway, leaving at Exit 63 signposted Benissa. After leaving the dual carriageway, follow signs to Teulada-Moraira, cross the municipality on the Avenida del Mediterráneo, at the end of this avenue head left following signs for Benitachell. Via the N-332 (Alicante-Valencia) main road taking the CV-740 road which also leads to Benissa, Teulada-Moraira and Javea. There is a coach service in Benitachell, ALSA, which provides a full service connecting Benitachell with other municipalities in the province and with connections to other services to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Castellón, Alicante, Murcia, Almería, Granada, Malaga, Cordoba, Seville, etc. Consult the Alsa website for details of routes and timetables. Fiestas Like the vast majority of Spain's towns and villages, fiestas in Benitachell are an event not to be missed. All the residents come out onto the streets to party and enjoy the events that the fiestas committee organises each year in honour of the town's patron saints. In May, Benitachell celebrates the 'Fiestas de la Rosa' in honour of the Virgin of the Rosary, a celebration comprising various religious events (church masses and processions) and entertainment (dancing, bull running, fireworks displays, horseback procession, etc.). One of the highlights of the religious events is the blessing and distribution of bread to all residents. In July, partying is guaranteed in the town with the "Moors and Christians" fiesta, when the town is transformed by parades, pennants, nightly celebrations by local associations, the re-enactment of the conquest and reconquest, various other events linked to this celebration and the all-pervading smell of fireworks. After the Moors and Christians the partying continues in Benitachell, since July also sees the Fiestas for patron saint St Mary Magdalene and for San Roque, San Cristóbal and San Jaime. Religious services are held each day to honour the saints. It is the most traditional of the town's fiestas. In former times, they signalled a halt to work in the fields and vineyards and a few days' rest for the workers which they made the most of to go out at night and visit their neighbours, recharging their batteries to then return to the hard work of grape harvesting. Today, thanks to the fiestas committee's efforts over the year to raise the necessary fiesta funds, the fiesta calendar is much fuller with parades, enormous paellas, fireworks displays, 5 days of bull running in the streets at midday, in the afternoon and at night. These fiestas last over a week and the town becomes particularly beautiful, full of music and colour. There are also possibilities for practising sport, particularly rambling and diving. The coastline of Benitachell is very dramatic with sheer, high cliffs and coves. There are a number of rambling routes that we can take from cove to cove, enjoying magnificent views and taking in the caves dug into the cliffs over the years by the Benitachell locals for shelter. They fashioned rope platforms that they hung from the cliffs to fish from, called "Pesqueres". The Barranco de los Tiestos route, the Falla del Morach route, the Moraig Underwater Route, and the Cliff route, are the options Benitachell offers us, with information on all the routes which are well signposted. All of them finish up in coves and BEACHES with crystalline waters in which to bathe, a reward for the physical effort of completing the rambling route. BEACHES: The orography of Benitachell features cliffs over 100 metres high, plunging down to the sea below. This is the perfect place to discover marine nature in the numerous caves and grottoes in the municipality, and to practise water sports such as sailing, diving or scuba diving, surrounded by a landscape that is pretty, enchanting, well cared for and with much history. De los Tiestos cove: a small, hidden away cove 100 metres wide and 150 metres long. It can be reached either from the sea or along a footpath which offers great natural beauty and views along the coastline. Calm, clean waters are our reward on arriving here. Llebeig cove: a small cove with crystalline waters, situated on the border of Benitachell with TEULADA-MORAIRA. It can be reached from the sea or along various rambling routes such as the Cliff Path which goes from el Moraig to Llebeig cove, or from Moraira there is another route, the Portet de Moraira route to Llebeig cove. A well deserved reward for lovers of nature and rambling. Llebeig cove: a Mediterranean paradise. El Moraig beach: ideal for swimming, diving and scuba diving, with outstanding water quality and cleanliness. El Moraig beach is 250 metres long and 40 metres wide, with unusual coarse sand and pebbles. There is a lifeguard service, vehicular access and car park, it is well signposted, regularly cleaned and there are hammock and skate hire facilities as well as a bar and beachfront restaurant. The coastline is of limestone, which the waters have carved into caves and other striking geological formations. In addition to the attractive features of el Moraig beach itself there is the "Cova del Arcs"(Cave of Arches), a marvel of nature and the entry point to the el Moraig Underwater Route. Access to el Moraig beach is through the Cumbres del Sol development along the General Playa road, signposted from the entrance to the development.
