Bagheria, from the arabic Bāb al-Gerib "windy gateway", is an Italian town located on the northern coast of Sicily, about 13 km far from Palermo. In 1658, Giuseppe Branciforti Prince of Butera and Viceroy of Sicily, built in Bagheria his large villa, Palazzo Butera, and established the region as the preferred location for the vacation homes of Palermo's elites, like Villa Palagonia, Villa Valguarnera, Palazzo Cut˛, Villa Cattolica, Villa Trabia, Villa Larderia, Villa Villarosa, Palazzo Inguaggiato, Villa Spedalotto, Villa Rammacca, and others.
During 1700 and 1800, Bagheria was called "The small Versailles" and it was a preferred stopping point for european travellers like Patrick Brydone, Wolfgang Goethe, John Soane, Friedrich Schinkel, pursuing the Grand Tour in Sicily .
Today Bagheria is also famous for artists like Domenico Quattrociocchi and Renato Guttuso (whose paintings are exposed in the Museum of Villa Cattolica).
The cinematographic director Giuseppe Tornatore portrayed his love for his town in the multiple award winning film Nuovo Cinema Paradiso in 1989 and in the film Baarýa in 2009, featuring the history of the town from the 1930s to the 1980s through the life of a local family.
The town is also depicted in other international films like The Godfather part III and Johnny Stecchino.
In the end Bagheria is famous for confectionery inspired to baroque tradition .
The Mediterranean climate makes the stay in Bagheria pleasant throughout the year.
