why chamberi district has such a name?
ok, why is the town of chamberi called chamberi anyway? have you ever asked yourself?
the answer can be found a few kilometers away, in the french city of chambery, the historic capital of the dukedom of savoy, which is located at the foot of the alps, some forty kilometers south of annecy and eighty kilometers south of geneva.

if we go back in time, it all started when napoleon's troops surrounded madrid to try to occupy it during the war for independence. they set up in this district, in particular on the esplanade that today is home to chamberi plaza. back then, this area was a bunch of land for agriculture. the french regiment that stayed there was called the chambery regiment, in honor of the french city.

the french armies failed in their attempt to conquer spain, and the role of those from madrid was the deciding factor. napoleon and his troops had to retreat without reaching their goal. however, the footprint of that invasion had always remained in the memory of the city, since the term chamberi was quickly adopted and turned into castillian, leaving us with one of the most beautiful towns of madrid ever.
