The area:
Lyon is the third largest city in France, after Paris and Marseilles. Its history reaches as far back as Roman times and was the major city of ancient Gaul. It lies at the junction of two great rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, which converge to the south.
There are many important historical buildings to explore as well as the basilica. For example, there is the Hotel Dieu, which was originally built in the 12th century and later rebuilt by the architect JG Soufflot in the 18th century. There is the Musée de Beaux-Arts, which can be found in the former Abbey of the Ladies of St-Pierre, in the centre of the city. It has one of the largest art collections in France including ancient Egyptian art as well as works by artists such as Manet, Monet, Picasso and many others. There is also, just beyond the Cathédrale St-Jean the Vieux Lyon metro that leads to remarkable Roman remains.
As with any major European city there are excellent shopping facilities, with the famous Part-Dieu shopping centre, located beneath the Credit Lyonnais Tower, a short distance from the TGV station.
Lyon is also known as the gastronomic capital of France and as such there are a multitude of restaurants and bistros in the town that offer everything from simple market produce, or regular fast food, right up to the finest cuisine of anywhere.

St Exupery international airport is about 25 km east of Lyon with flights from the UK handled by most of the major airlines. The TGV station is also there and it is a two-hour trip from Paris and three-hour trip from Lille.
