Location and surrounding area:
Canet-plage is built on a long sandy beach so typical of the Languedoc coastline. The beach offers distant views on the foothills of the Pyrenees rolling down into the Mediterranean. Canet also boasts a very important leisure harbour and colourful street markets several times a week. The area is divided into 3 parts: Canet plage along the beach, Canet Port around the marina, and Canet Village the old original village with its architecture of a typical French Southern village made of stone and red bricks, its impressive church and narrow streets. In a fairly small area one can enjoy three very different atmospheres.
Between Canet and the next seaside resorts Saint Cyprien-plage, nature has been preserved and will remain so because the site is not constructible. The road is set between the sea and a vast lagoon sheltering flamingos and other wild birds, and commands picturesque views onto the Pyrenees. Around Easter it is not uncommon to bathe on the beach with the snowy Pyrenees as a backdrop! It is not uncommon either to go skiing for the day and come back for diner on the beach!
On this long sandy coastline, beaches are not overcrowded because parts of the coast are not built, so with a bit of courage and astuteness you can find a beach almost all to yourself. Golf players will enjoy an International Golf in St Cyprien a mere 5 km away, with a pleasant course with views over the water. In terms of outdoor activity, there is a wealth of choice: the area is renowned for wind surfing, while cycling is very popular and easy along the flat coastline. For water activity one has the choice between sailing, swimming in a warm and safe sea or scuba diving and snorkelling along the Vermilion coast just nearby. White waters activities can also be practiced in the nearby Pyrenees.
South of Canet - Plage, when rolling down into the sea, the Pyrenees create a dramatic landscape known as Côte Vermeille (Vermilion coast), named after the red colour of its rocky steep hills at sunset, which creates a contrast with the deep blue of the sea.
Given its tormented relief this rocky part of the coastline is a renowned snorkelling and diving paradise. It is protected by the only Submarine Natural Reserve in France and a funny landmarked submarine path leads from Banyuls to Cerbère. For those who want to discover the coastline in a more traditional way, a coastal footpath starts in Argeles and follows the steep coastline with dramatic views on the sea, the coves and vineyards. Collioure is the jewel of the 4 villages of Côte Vermeille with its ancient listed monuments, its small colourful fishermen houses nestled around its tiny harbour, arty shops, many restaurants and bars. From Collioure to the Spanish border, a mere 20 km away, you will find 3 other villages or harbours, Port Vendres, Banyuls and Cerbère. A beautifully preserved natural site recently re-developed in Paulilles offers a succession of natural and unspoilt coves. North of Collioure is Argelès sur mer, a resorts dating back to the 60's and making the transition between the scenic rocky coastline and the flat and sandy coastline, with an adorable little spot called Le Racou where colourful beach cabins are lined along the beach and time seems to have stopped in the 50's.
The "PO" as we say in French boasts not only a dramatic coastline but also an interesting hinterland. It offers plenty of treasures, because it is even more undiscovered than the coastline. Yet there are wonderful, wild, rough landscapes maybe at the image of the tormented history of the Cathars and the many castles and fortresses they have left behind. Pyrenees Orientales are among the French regions with the more scenic roads. The Pyrenees foothills named Le Massif des Albères offer many outdoors activities such as walking, hiking, climbing, horse riding in the magnificent scenery of Mediterranean Pyrenees. There are no less than one National Park (Parc Naturel Regional des Pyrénées Catalanes), 3,500 km of landmarked path, 23 listed sites. For instance 'Le Sentier Cathare' (The Cathar Path) leads from the Mediterranean Sea to Foix in Ariège along 250 km linking 9 Cathar fortresses in a beautiful scenery. All of these treasures bathed by a hot and sunny Mediterranean climate.
The area is a popular area, especially in summer, there is no denying it but it is not, by far, entirely dedicated to mass tourism so if you are curious enough and well documented it is very easy to walk off the beaten tracks and discover the genuine spirit of the area, its still very lively traditions and its joyful way of life.
