About Watton
Watton is the heart of the Breckland district of Norfolk, located some 25 miles west of Norwich, 10 miles south west of Dereham and 13.5 miles North of Thetford.
Further afield, Cambridge, London and the Midlands can be accessed via the A11 or rail links in Norwich / Thetford and the airport in Norwich provides national and international flights.
There is mention in the doomsday book of 1086 to its Royal Market.
The lower part of the town sign has a hare leaping over a barrel. This is believed to date back to the 19th century, an old Norfolk term for a hare is a “wat” and a barrel can be called a “tun”, hence wat-tun.
Watton itself has a “small town” feel, with a population of about 6,500 but offers a wide range of facilities, specialist shops include fashion, an antiquarian bookshop and picture gallery, crafts, whole food & organic specialists, and boasts 2 hard ware stores.
There is a regular Wednesday market, together with a farmers market held on the 1st Saturday of the month during February to December. There is a good selection of Café’s, coffee shops, public houses and take aways in the town centre.
Watton has a thriving sports centre, with a fantastic range of activities, an 18-hole golf course at nearby Richmond Park, about half a mile from the town centre, a library and numerous churches including Church of England and Methodist. The town council own and run the youth & community centre.
Schooling for all ages can be catered for with an infant & nursery school, junior school and community high school.
Local attractions include Melsop Farm Park, offering family fun down on the farm, Thetford forest, Banham Zoo, Goodeston water gardens and the ancient Wayland wood, noted for its bluebells and association with “Babes in the Wood” legend.
