Historical Note: Western Esplanade was built between 1909 and 1910 by Michael Pagett Baxter, who built No. 1 as his own marine-side home, and which remained in his family for the next 70 years. Overcrowding on British seaside beaches in their heyday meant that a private beach was the last word in luxury for the wealthiest families. On completion, the villas were offered as an ideal winter retreat, fully furnished in great style. A particular luxury in those days were bathrooms which had the option of both hot and cold running sea or fresh water on tap. There was even a telephone!   The price of this gracious living was 4 guineas a week, rising to 7 guineas in the winter.   These rentals would compare to a week at the Grand Hotel, where rates in the mid 1920s reached the princely sum of almost 1 a night.

Over the years the villas have seen many changes. In September 1939 the white houses on the beach turned black when Hove seaside villas were commandeered by the military and camouflaged from passing enemy aircraft. Used as barracks during the wartime years, tenants included officers of the Royal Canadian Air Force who were housed in No. 1.   After the war, Western Esplanade returned to its' rightful shade of white. In the 60s and 70s, many interesting people have been attracted by the idea of living in this wonderful beachside haven and today it continues to attract the rich and famous.

Description

1 Western Esplanade, at some 6,800 sq.ft, is the largest of the houses built and conceived as Michael Pagett Baxter's own home.   The present owners, who have lived here for nearly 40 years, have extended and expanded the house with great imagination.   This has included the creation of a self contained annexe, leisure wing including swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi, together with a multi-car underground garage. Both garaging and leisure wing are approached from the inside of the house by way of concealed doors.   As a result the accommodation is extremely adaptable, either providing a sizeable 7-bedroom family house or allowing the owners to use half the property as a self-contained annexe for extended family members or guests. All the principal rooms face south, sheltered on the ground floor by a covered verandah with direct frontage to the foreshore and beach. On the first floor, partially covered balconies lead directly from the principal bedrooms and afford panoramic elevated views over the foreshore, sea and Hove Lagoon. If this were not enough, planning consent has also been granted for a further extension above the leisure wing, creating up to 6 further bedrooms if required.

This is perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a truly unique marine-side residence, ideal for use as a weekend retreat or idyllic permanent home.
