Brechin lies within commuting distance of both Aberdeen and Dundee, which are easily reached by the nearby A90 dual carriageway. Both offer all the facilities expected of major centres. There are services from Dundee to London City, Birmingham and Belfast. Private schooling is available at Lathallan (Johnshaven).
The cathedral city of Brechin is well placed to take advantage of the many sporting pursuits the county of Angus has to offer. There are golf courses at Edzell and Montrose and championship courses at Letham Grange (Arbroath), and Carnoustie. Fishing is available on the nearby South and North Esks. The Angus Glens, which form the foothills of the Grampian mountains, offer some of the best hill walking in Eastern Scotland, together with ski-ing at Glenshee in the winter.
Westerlea is a most attractive house, dating from 1925, with a date stone above the front door, and which still retains many of its original Arts & Craft features. It is harled with a red pan tile roof. As such it is a most striking and handsome house. It was acquired by the sellers in 1998. At that time they set out an ambitious programme of refurbishment and extended the house. The wing is very much in keeping with the original house and includes an imposing indoor swimming pool complex and a large integral garage, as well as one of the conservatories, which links to the drawing room and provides an ideal seating and entertaining area. In addition all the windows in the house were replaced with double glazing. The house was re-wired and partially re-plumbed, the central heating was renewed and the bathroom and shower rooms were refurbished. The house was also fully redecorated, both inside and out, whilst blinds and sun shades were replaced. Some windows have electronically operated sun shades whilst there are electrically operated sun shades around the pool.
As such Westerlea is a most imposing house, in excellent condition. It provides most comfortable and spacious accommodation and is ideal for both entertaining and modern family living. Whilst fully modernised it still retains much of its period feel and character, including pine panelled doors and cornicings. Airlie Street is a quiet street and Westerlea benefits from its own extensive grounds, which add further privacy and seclusion.
Circular stone gate piers with cast iron gates open onto a gravelled parking and turning area adjacent to both the front door and the garage. The accommodation, on three floors, comprises
Hall, drawing room, dining room, sitting room, two conservatories, cloakroom, kitchen, WC, laundry room, master bedroom with dressing room and en suite bathroom, 4 further bedrooms (one with en suite WC), 2 shower rooms, office. There is an indoor swimming pool with changing room.
There is an integral garage with two automatic roller doors , concrete floor, fitted cupboard, doors to garden and further doors to the laundry and to the boiler room.
Immediately adjacent to the parking area the garden includes shrub and heather borders with some trees providing privacy.
In front, and to the south, of the house the gardens comprise lawns, some lovely shrub borders and some fine trees including cedars and cherry trees. There is a sunken circular gravelled area with a sun dial and raised paved terraces linking to the conservatories. In addition there is a wooden cabin (3 m x 5 m) with a separate changing room and shower, together with a Wendy house.
In the south east corner of the garden is a wooden garden shed, and separate access onto Airlie Street. Behind the cabin the garden comprises spring bulbs, further trees and a rockery, together with an access leading to North Latch Road.
