Situation
Highgrove House sits in a commanding position with spectacular views over this favourable village and the surrounding rolling countryside towards the coast at Shaldon. Highweek is a strong community with a well-regarded public house, village hall and church, near the bustling market town of Newton Abbot. Newton Abbot is also within easy reach of Totnes and Torquay, and there is a cattle market on Wednesday, and general market on Saturdays. There is a mainline railway station in the town providing speedy access to London Paddington, together with a comprehensive range of shopping and recreational facilities, including plenty of golf courses. Several primary and secondary schools are within walking distance, and communications are easily accessed via the A38 to Exeter, Plymouth and the wider motorway network.
Description
Highgrove House is a large detached family home built in 1932, spending part of its early life as a rectory for All Saints Church at Highweek, which can be seen just across the valley. The house is built of brick elevations on the ground floor with rendering on the first floor, accented by natural stone hung and leaded fascias and roofing. Reception rooms are spacious and elegant, echoing the style of the era, and bedroom accommodation ranges from the generous master through to the characterful former servants quarters. The many bay windows at Highgrove House make the most of the views over the bountiful gardens and the far-reaching vistas.
Accommodation
A solid, studded timber door leads into an entrance porch, with a further timber door featuring obscure leaded lights leading into the main entrance hall. This leads to the dining room, breakfast room and kitchen, sitting room, cloakroom/butlers closet, a useful understairs cupboard and an Art Deco inspired, solid timber staircase with carpeted treads leads to the first floor accommodation. The dining room is dual aspect with a large bay over the entrance drive and front garden and features an early 20th century open fireplace with tiled hearth and a unique timber surround. The sitting room has exposed timber flooring and has windows over the front and side gardens and far-reaching views over Newton Abbot and patchwork hillsides on the horizon. This substantial room also features an open fireplace with tiled hearth and period timber surround and mantel. The butlers closet has an internal door to the WC with an obscure glazed window, a timber vanity unit with period wash hand basin, shelving under and a tiled surround. The breakfast room features a gas fire, built-in china cupboards that stretch from the floor to ceiling and a large window over the side. The utility room has a built-in Belfast sink and draining unit with obscure glazed leaded window, space and plumbing for a washing machine and several storage and utility cupboards. The kitchen has been refitted in recent years to include modern base and wall units with roll edged work surfaces, a large composite sink and drainer unit with Crown mixing tap over, space and plumbing for dishwasher, a Rangemaster Classic cooker with extraction hood and 5-burner hob, hotplate, double oven and grill under, integrated refrigerator/freezer, several useful pull-out cupboards and windows overlook the garden at the rear. The back hallway incorporates the boiler and freezer room and leads to the porch/boot room with full height double glazed sliding doors to the patio.
The winding, period staircase leads to a small half landing with a harlequin leaded window over the rear garden and a bathroom with panelled bath, WC, pedestal wash hand basin and a delightful round window over the front. The first floor accommodation includes the master bedroom, four further double bedrooms, the family bath/shower room, separate WC, several storage cupboards and a useful maids closet. The master bedroom holds pride of place in the house with large windows to the south and east, enjoying distant views all the way to coastline at Labrador Bay. Bedroom 2 is a sizeable double bedroom with windows to the south and west and built-in wardrobes. Bedroom 3, currently used as a second sitting room, has doors and windows out onto the balcony at the front of the house framed by a beautiful and prolific wisteria. The recently refitted family bath/shower room has a panelled bath with period style mixer tap and shower unit, a window over the side, a vanity unit with wash hand basin, a large shower cubicle with thermostatic shower over, a heated towel rail and stylish downlighters. Next door, is a separate WC with obscure glazed window over the side. Through an ornate archway, the hallway leads to Bedrooms 4 and 5, most likely maids quarters in days gone by, and both are double bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and windows over the side and rear gardens. The maids closet is fitted with a period shelving unit with an enamelled sink and drainer over and an obscure glazed window over the side, built in cupboard and a period water heater. Also in the rear hallway, is the loft hatch with obscure glazed hatch to the substantial loft space which stretches the full length and width of the house.
Outside
Highgrove House is accessed via a gated entrance through brick pillars onto the drive that sweeps around the side of the house, leading to a timber garage and workshop and parking for more than four cars. A useful timber and glass greenhouse sits aside the garage, where many of the bountiful flowering plants and shrubs undoubtedly started their lives. The garden at Highgrove House wraps around the side and front and is laid out in several terraces, bordered by hundreds of flowering plants, specimen shrubs, trees and stone walls and stairways.
