Hamilton House was built at the turn of the century by Sir Archibald Hamilton, the elder son of Sir Edward Hamilton of Iping House, Midhurst, and a direct descendant of Lord Nelson's Lady Hamilton. This unique house was built in Tudor-style folly with decorative timber work and fascias, finials and ornate paintwork depicting many wild birds including pheasant, robin, woodpecker and curlew. Two stone lions sit at either side of the front door and other decorative details include a rams head, mermaids and porthole style windows with plaster shells. The interior is unique in its character with stripped pine floors and further decorative timber work. There is a first floor balcony off the main bedroom having splendid views to the sea and the Isle of Wight. Quite apart from its fascinating appearance, the cottage has an interesting history and visitors have included Queen Mary, who is known to have stayed here in 1914, and the Emperor Hail Selassie of Ethiopia during his self-imposed exile in England between 1935 and 1941. The gardens are also a particular feature of Hamilton House with a large entertaining terrace adjoining the property as well as a small pillared folly and sweeping lawned gardens leading down to the bottom of the garden where there is direct access to the beach.
Selsey offers a good range of local shops and restaurants as well as public houses, medical centre, primary and secondary schools. Pagham Harbour and Nature Reserve can be found a short distance to the north, which is an internationally important site for nature conservation and a site of Special Scientific Interest. Chichester lies approximately 10 miles to the north and offers a wide range of recreational and cultural facilities including Pallant House Gallery and the internationally renowned Festival Theatre. There are numerous sporting activities in the area including sailing from Chichester Harbour, windsurfing and bathing at the nearby Blue Flag beaches of West Wittering, and horse racing can be found at Goodwood and Fontwell.
