Lenzie is one of the most desirable commuter suburbs on the north side of Glasgow, with a mainline railway station offering services to both Glasgow and Edinburgh. The town is surrounded by picturesque farmland and provides four primary schools and Lenzie Academy, which is acknowledged for its distinguished academic record. The town provides a range of shops, parish churches and a number of sporting venues which include Lenzie Rugby Club and Lenzie Golf Club. The general locality provides a further selection of sports facilities including Bishopbriggs Sports Centre, Hayston and Bishopbriggs Golf Courses and bowling clubs. The Forth and Clyde Canal is nearby.

Machrie Mhor is considered by many to be the finest house in Lenzie. Dating from 1910, and once the home of the late Scottish tenor Kenneth McKellar, it was bought by the present owners in 1997. At this time it was extended and comprehensively upgraded. Over the last 14 years it has been fastidiously maintained and improved to include a remarkable specification.

Formed over three levels and built under a slate roof, this Edwardian villa comprises over 5000 sq ft of flexible accommodation. It has wonderful formal reception rooms for entertaining and whilst at one time it offered a swimming pool, its east wing has been cleverly remodelled to include a home cinema, games room and gymnasium. It has five bedrooms, many of which include fitted furniture by Smallbone of Devizes. Throughout the house you will see the work of Specialist Cabinet Maker Douglas Muir who has designed some remarkable pieces of bespoke fitted furniture.

Steps dressed in Caithness stone ascend to a loggia with sandstone pillars. The vestibule with hand painted murals and Karndean floor leads to the main reception hallway.

The reception hallway is of grand proportions, almost square in shape and leads to the main reception rooms. It has a Karndean floor and central staircase. The drawing room has a magnificent bay window and French doors leading to the patio. It has a gas flame effect fire set into a simple wooden fireplace. The sitting room has a box bay window and a gas flame effect fire set into a substantial Victorian style fireplace with brass canopy.

The dining room is most formal and leads to the kitchen. The kitchen can also be accessed off an inner hall from the main reception hall. It was very well fitted by Charles Yorke in 2001 and offers excellent storage at wall mounted and counter levels. It has polished granite worktops, and a double Belfast sink. It has a cream four oven Aga with roasting, simmering, baking and warming ovens set in a recess with a hand painted tiled splashback and a beautiful over mantel with corbels. Other appliances include a wine cooler, microwave and American style fridge freezer. The central island has a deep cherry worktop and is set on lockable castors. The kitchen has a linked breakfast room, off which is a large, walk-in linen store. A wc and a larger cloakroom with further wc, complete the accommodation on this level.

Steps descend from the inner hall to the lower ground floor level with a number of storage rooms, a wine store, a large utility room with fitted units and a bedroom. Off the bedroom and utility room is a small lobby with a door to the garden.

A short set of stairs from an inner hallway off the kitchen lead down to the games room, which is panelled to mid level, has a tiled floor and French doors onto the patio. Off the games room is a cinema room, cleverly designed with fitted furniture by Specialist Cabinet Maker Douglas Muir. It too is panelled to around mid level. Off the games room is an inner hall leading to a gymnasium, a changing room with two showers and wc and a plant room. The integral garage can also be accessed from this level.

On the first floor are four double bedrooms. The master bedroom has fitted furniture by Smallbone of Devizes including bedside tables and dressing table. From here an archway leads into the dressing room which at one time would have been a bedroom. It too has fitted wardrobes by Smallbone of Devizes. The smallest bedroom is presently used as a study and the family bathroom was refitted in 2008 with sanitary ware by Porcelanosa and bespoke carpentry by Douglas Muir. It has a Duravit wc, kidney shaped wash hand basin and shower compartment by Huppe.

The grounds of Machrie Mhor are very special. They have been carefully planned and are fastidiously maintained.

Elaborate iron gates which are electrically operated open to a paved driveway leading to a beautifully presented turning circle at the front of the house. The gardens boast manicured lawns, seasonally colourful, well stocked borders and strategically positioned terraces, ideal for dining al fresco at different times of the day. Magnificent fir trees and high hedges provide privacy.

In addition to the integral double garage, there is a detached double garage and ample parking space.

From Glasgow proceed east along the M8, following signs for M80 Stirling. Once on the M80, at Junction 3, take the B757, signposted to Kirkintilloch. Follow the B757 (Auchinloch Road) and immediately after Arnold Clark's garage on the right, turn first left up Glenhead Road and at the T-junction with Victoria Road turn left and the distinctive contemporary gates to Machrie Mhor will be found on the left hand side. The name Machrie Mhor can be seen on the left hand side.
