The Story
As young doctors they moved to Usk to work, and quite by accident rented a property that turned out to be a hidden gem.
As soon as they moved into Plas Newydd Cottage, they realised what a fantastic place it was to live - right in the heart of the town and in a beautiful setting.
Over the years, they bought up all the buildings that had once been the stables, coach house and servants quarters for a large house, which was built in 1830. And slowly they converted them, creating a home that is now filled with character and truly unique.
This is such a wonderful place. It faces south-west and is in an idyllic, sunny spot. There is lots of space in the house and we have such beautiful views from the garden, said owner Dr Pauline Ruth.

WHERE THE HEART IS

Today, the kitchen is right at the heart of the expansive home. A former opening in the building was reinstated to allow an easy flow into the superb dining room.
There is also a fantastic utility room, where there is a view of the castle from the window, she said. The way the three rooms now interconnect has created a lovely space.
The main staircase as also moved from one end of the house to the middle.
This was the playroom when the children were small. Now it has become a third sitting room - there's a television and computer up there.

SOUND OF MUSIC

The main drawing room features a wood-burning stove and, with room for plenty of comfortable seating, is ideal for entertaining.
Beyond the kitchen area is a corridor leading down to a big study which overlooks the courtyard, she said. There is also a shower room and a third sitting room or music room, which has lots of windows, including a large arched window.
My son plays the violin and has his drum kit down there. Over the years we have had all sorts of instruments in there, and it has been a great place for them to be able to play without disturbing anyone else.

A UNIQUE CHARACTER

As much as possible of the original character of the buildings has been retained. Windows are now situated in spaces where carriages would once have driven in and out. The wrought iron gates that now stand at the entrance of the property have been specially made in a similar style to those of the large Georgian house.
Rooms have been renovated to a high quality. Floors are in wood or terracotta tiling. The kitchen has been built in a solid wood.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

This has been an incredibly happy family home, said Pauline. It has been a very comfortable place for all the children. There was always plenty of space for them to have lots of friends to sleep over and it has been such a wonderful place for all of us to live.
She added: I really believe it is unique - there is nowhere like it in Usk.
We live here in complete seclusion and yet are right in the middle of the town. That was simply brilliant when the children were growing up.

Ground Floor

Resting at ease amid its stunning surround, the attractive elevations of Plas Newydd Cottage give way to an equally charming interior where the combination of space and character provide unequivocal appeal. The large, sun-filled sitting room boasts four beautiful windows to the front, allowing natural light to wash over the room. The high ceilings heighten the sense of space, while the cast iron wood-burner with slate surround and flagstone hearth create a warm and inviting feel. First Floor

There are two staircases in the, one at each end of the house. The main stairway ascends to four bedrooms, including the wonderful master with en-suite. Each of the bedrooms are delightful with original fireplaces, high ceilings and windows offering stunning views over the gardens, castle and over to the Usk Valley, and some have original tongue and groove boarded walls. A play room/ family room and family bathroom complete this upper level.

The second stairway rises to a mezzanine bedroom that overlooks the music room and a further bedroom with storage in the eaves. This area would lend itself well to being used as an annexe or guest accommodation for friends and family.


Setting the Scene
When visitors step into the gardens of Plas Newydd Cottage, they are simply amazed. Pauline has, in the past, welcomed them in as part of an open garden scheme, and enjoys watching their reactions.
They find the views wonderful and often say this is one of the nicest gardens in the area, she said.
With the different sun-soaked areas and stone terraces, the leafy, mature trees and colourful blooms, it has been ideal for having sections in which children can play, and others for entertaining.
We have had marvellous parties in the courtyard, when we have put marquees up. The garden is also lovely for barbecues, she said.


Within Easy Reach
Usk itself was perfect as the children were growing up, said Pauline. There were good playgroups, schools and sports clubs for them to join, and plenty of other activities.
My daughter used to ride and kept her pony at stables near the castle, she said. It was all very easy when the children were growing up.

The popular, well established village also offers a village store/post office, public house, church and village hall. Virtually on the doorstep there is the Celtic Manor Resort, host to the Ryder Cup in 2010, whilst it's within easy reach of Raglan Castle.

It takes just five minutes to reach the A449, said Pauline, which leads on to the M4 and Chepstow. They can reach Cardiff, Monmouth and Abergavenny in 15 minutes, and can access the M5 easily too, leading on to other areas.


DIRECTIONS:
From Monmouth travel on the B4293 Monnow Street, continuing forward at the traffic signals onto the A466 signposted Ross, Chepstow. At the mini-roundabout remain on the A466 and at the subsequent roundabout take the third exit onto the A40 signposted Newport, Abergavenny, Chepstow and Forest of Dean. At the traffic signals continue forward signposted Newport, Abergavenny and proceed onto the A449. Branch left, then merge onto the A472 signposted Usk. Turn right onto Porthycarne Street - B4598, signposted Abergavenny and turn right onto Porthycarne Close.
