THE STORY
From the attractive village, with its duck pond and green, to the far-reaching views across the Misbourne Valley, the couple loved the area around Chalfont St Giles.
So when they decided to move out to Buckinghamshire, this was where they decided to make their home.
Forty years later, they still relish the tranquillity and security they found, and admit they are sad to be leaving The Vache Farm House after such a long time.
Not only has it given them space to enjoy the beauty of the location, but here they have been able to create a superb family home and watch their children grow up, they explained.
We loved the area, and this house, down a long, tree-lined drive, was a safe place for the children and was somewhere we could raise calves, cattle, sheep, pheasants and even pigs, said one of the owners.
We knew it would be a wonderful place to live and would be a beautiful spot for all sorts of activities.

GLORIOUS VIEWS

Set in an area known for its connections with Captain James Cook, the farmhouse-style property, which has outhouses and a swimming pool, has proved ideal through all the owners' phases of life over the past decades.
A traditional home, with modern aspects, it has been carefully maintained and upgraded over the years.
We added a lovely large kitchen, which has lots of oak and glass. It has floor-to-ceiling windows, with French windows on to the front garden. There are wonderful views from here - as there are from everywhere, she said.
The kitchen is quite modern, with delightful oak and granite work surfaces, but other rooms are quite traditional, with more of a country house style.

SUMMER OR WINTER

Meals are usually taken in the kitchen, with the more formal dining room, which has been exquisitely decorated in leopard print wallpaper, and furnished with Art Deco pieces, used on special occasions.
When the weather is warm, we often eat out on the covered terrace, sometimes having breakfast out there, she added. This leads out to the outdoor swimming pool.
The house does lend itself well to the different seasons. In the winter, the drawing room, with its wood-burning stove and three sets of French windows taking in the panorama, is a favourite sanctuary. In the summer, the airy sitting room is the perfect spot.
When we entertain we usually eat in the dining room, and then have the choice of having drinks in one of the sitting rooms or out on the terrace.

SPRING COLOUR

All the windows in the house give the most spectacular views across the surrounding countryside.
From our bedroom, we have views over the field, and behind that, is the wood, which becomes filled with bluebells, daffodils and foxgloves. It is absolutely wonderful, she said.
We have floor-to-ceiling windows in front and to the side, and a lovely en suite bathroom, with a large window.
From the house, the couple regularly spot deer, badgers, buzzards, kites and herons.
We also enjoy the most wonderful sunsets, she added. Living here is really quite something.



ACCOMMODATION
GROUND FLOOR

A wonderful tree lined driveway, reminiscent of the French countryside, marks the entrance to The Vache Farm House. Originally built in 1958 the house has been beautifully renovated by the present owners to form a delightful, modern family home. A brick pathway forms herringbone patterns as it leads you to the storm porch at the front. Black barge-boards clad the brickwork, mellow against the red tiled roof and in keeping with the rustic barns and farm yard buildings. The solid front door is made of light coloured oak and matches the beams within the house. Large glass panels either side of the doorway ensure that the reception hall is very bright and airy. A large hall way takes you into the heart of the house, where slatted beams have been cleverly used to create the effect of a hay loft. Passing the staircase to the first floor on your left hand side, you come to the first of three reception rooms, with views over the front and rear grounds this would make a perfect family sitting room or den.

Continuing along the hall you will find a spacious, modern cloakroom. Moving on, the dining room is decorated in an art deco style, with animal print wallpaper and wall lights that echo the designs made famous by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Beautiful, mellow arched wooden doors with heavy brass hinges add to the atmosphere and lead you into the large drawing room. A chunky wood burning stove within the inglenook fireplace generates a warm and cosy ambience and is a real feature, together with the views through the French doors over the grasslands and lightly wooded areas to the rear of the farm. Stepping back into the hallway, the pale oak rustic pillars interlock with crossbeams above you, continuing the contemporary barn-like feel. The kitchen is wonderfully welcoming with the whole of the south-west aspect being glazed and framing vistas across the Misbourne Valley. Two pairs of French doors open onto the front gardens and terrace, making this the perfect spot to sit with a glass of wine and watch the sun disappear over the Chiltern Hills. On the rear wall of the kitchen, a bright red Aga emits a gentle heat as it sits between modern beech cabinets, topped with shiny black granite work tops. The large island unit has plenty of storage drawers and cupboards, as well as the double sink unit and gas hob. Additionally there is plenty of room for a good size table and chairs, ideal for relaxed family gatherings.

From the kitchen, double doors guide out to the garden room where the portico terrace is ideal for al fresco entertaining. At the far end you will find the master bedroom suite which boasts a deep walk-in dressing room and a luxurious white bathroom, complete with Jacuzzi bath and separate shower. Two picture windows give views over the rear grasslands, whilst a small balcony on the southern wall adds extra interest and charm to this lovely room. SETTING THE SCENE
With over 24 acres (STMS) of land, The Vache Farm House would be ideal for anyone looking to rear animals or keep horses.
The current owners made full use of the stables by keeping Shetland ponies.
At the moment, the land in front of the house is open pasture, with copses of blossoming trees, she said. When the children were younger, they would run and play out there, and we would have picnics. There is another field, which is used for cutting hay in the summer but it would be easy to fence these off to create paddocks.
The area has also been used for camping and events, such as weddings, in the past.
We also have about an acre of garden close to the house, where there is the rockery, and the terrace that is covered in climbing plants, such as clematis and jasmine.
The old farm has numerous outbuildings including six/seven stables, a workshop, garaging for four cars, an 1800 bale hay barn, a timber store and a green house.


WHAT'S NEARBY ()
It takes 15 minutes to walk into Chalfont St Giles from The Vache Farm House.

Chalfont St Giles is a picturesque ancient Chiltern town with a village duck pond and several small independent shops and many good restaurants and pubs. Nearby, pretty Old Amersham has numerous boutiques and cafes to discover, as well as The Crown Hotel which was featured in the famous film, Four Weddings and a Funeral.

It is also close to Little Chalfont, from where trains into London's Marylebone Station take about half an hour.
There are a wealth of facilities, attractions and places to visit in the area, with four golf courses within 15 minutes drive, and a number of beautiful National Trust properties within easy reach.

The area is much sought after for the great many nationally renowned schools, including the Challoners Grammar Schools.


WITHIN EASY REACH
Both the M40 and M25 are in close proximity, making it easy to travel by car. Heathrow Airport takes about half an hour to reach. Luton and Gatwick are also easy to travel to.

DIRECTIONS
From the A40 at Denham take the A413 heading north towards Amersham and the Chalfonts. On reaching Chalfont St Giles stay on the A413 and go straight across at the double roundabout just outside the village. Look for three black and white traffic bollards and turn right immediately before them into a private driveway, which has a small sign 'St Giles Lodge'. On reaching the electrically operated green gates, press the buzzer marked Vache Farm House and as the gates open follow the beautiful tree lined drive up the hill. You will see Vache Farm House on your left hand side.
