The owner of Willow Farm came across her dream home almost by accident.
She was driving past the Hockley house, on her way to visit another property, when she spotted the for sale sign and decided to stop to have a look.
It was so beautiful - it had such a lot of kerb appeal, she recalled. I just fell in love with it and decided that was where I wanted to live.
Inside, the house offered plenty of space but was also homely and welcoming. Outside, its extensive grounds were breathtakingly beautiful and offered potential for equestrian use.
I had plans to build a tennis court and to convert the hay barn, she said. There was such a lot of potential.

SUNSHINE DAYS

The house, which boasts an impressive drive, with parking for some 10 cars, is very well laid out and was in good condition, according to the owner.
I was very pleased with the way it was and so have not done too much since moving in, she explained. I had a porch created at the front and decorated the room I call 'the snug' - and had a wood-burner put in. This is now a lovely room to be in.
Also downstairs is the library. Here, sun pours in from the south-facing garden.
I love to go and sit in there to read a book, she said. I also like my office, where I can sit at the computer and look out across the garden.

WORK AND PLAY

The owner was using one of the upstairs bedrooms as an office but she was tempted to move her workstation downstairs so she could gaze out of the French windows on to the parkland grounds.
This is a spacious house with rooms that can have all sorts of uses, she suggested. I sometimes hold my singing class here. Then, there are 15 of us, all having a lesson in the library, as well as the teacher, who plays the keyboard.
At Christmas it was also really nice - there were seven of us here then.
Upstairs, bedrooms have been carefully decorated. One has an exquisite feature wall in a stylish print, while others have splashes of colour in the soft furnishings.
When I wake up in the morning, the sun comes shining right into my room, she said. It is wonderfully warm right along the back of the house all morning.

RURAL AMBIENCE

Set in 2.5 acres of grounds, Willow Farm has three stables, a hay barn and a ménage.
It would be ideal for anyone wishing to keep horses, especially as there is a separate entrance, she said. I was not planning to do so myself but was thinking of converting the stables perhaps into a cottage.
The hay barn could have been a superb games room and I was going to make an outdoor entertaining area.
The whole property feels like it is in the middle of the countryside yet is highly convenient for reaching shops, train stations and routes to other parts of the country.
I can be sitting outside, reading down by the brook at the end of the garden, or watching the sun set and it is so quiet, I sometimes feel as if I am in the middle of nowhere.

The historic market town of Rochford is nearby as well as London Southend on Sea airport which is undergoing expansion and improvement and will be offering flights across Europe. By road you can access the A13, A127 and A130 which gives easy access to the M25 and London.

Hawkwell is on the outskirts of Hockley which has a lovely small town centre plus a railway station giving a journey time of approximately 45 minutes to London Liverpool Street. The owners took full advantage of the local amenities: I liked being on a bus route and close to stations at Hockley and Rochford. There is a gym up the road, as well as shops, restaurants, takeaways and a doctor's surgery. Local golf clubs, delightful countryside walks and numerous equestrian facilities are also close by.
