Brandsby lies at the edge of the most beautiful, undulating country at the foot of the Howardian
Hills. This is the area where the Vale of York gives way to rolling, wooded terrain, and The Old Rectory occupies an enviable position, set in its own private small dale, with south facing pasture land and a stream-fed lake teeming with brown and rainbow trout.
To the west and slightly south lies the charming Georgian market town of Easingwold which provides

The Old Rectory, one of North Yorkshire's finest family houses, is listed Grade II* as being of special
architectural and historical interest. The original house dates from 1565 and was built by the
incumbent, Robert Wilson. It was at this time partially thatched and it was only later, in the
Regency period that the fine Georgian front in ashlar stone was added. A date stone reads
"Walter Smith, Rector, 1807" There is an extant list, held in the church, of all the incumbents over the years with the precise dates of their induction and departure or decease. It is interesting to note that the average tenure was over thirty years, clearly indicating the desirability of The Old Rectory as a wonderful home and Brandsby as a sought after living. It was only in 1938 that the property was for the first time sold into private hands.
The Principal House
The Old Rectory has two accesses, front and rear, both with gates. The main drive, which lies almost opposite the church, is gravelled and sweeps up to the house under a magnificent beech tree and past flowering cherry and rowan. The pillared front door has a classical fanlight with delicate tracery and leads into the flagged hall and gently rising staircase with the slenderest of spindles. Both drawing room and dining room have 12 ft ceiling heights with twin,full length sash windows, each with an open fireplace and some fine plasterwork. The breakfast room has glazed double doors to the garden terrace and the kitchen, in oak, has an Aga and granite worktops. Both the principal bedroom and guest bedroom have twin sash windows and en suite facilities, whilst the rear, 16th century part of the house, reflects its period with stone mullions, leaded lights and exposed timbers.
The attached cottage has its own access and is part of the 16th century original. It includes two
bedrooms, a shower room, kitchen and living room, all recently modernised and in fine order.
The stable courtyard, with access from both front and rear drive, has a geometric design of cobbles, flags and gravel. Around it are grouped two loose boxes, three stables, extensive garaging and a new, general purpose building providing cover for tractors and landrovers, workshop, etc.
Pool area and leisure suite
This is formed from the original coach house with a fine modern extension completed in 2008, and now includes a ground floor kitchen, exercise room/gym, wet room and w.c. On the first floor is a tv
room/sitting room overlooking the pool. The pool itself is some 13 metres (42 ft) long with a

Garden and grounds
To the right of the main entrance drive is the tennis court, set below the stone ha-ha which is draped with aubretia. A wild woodland garden has a venerable copper beech, tall conifers including Scots pine, and laburnum. The hidden glory of the gardens is the south facing walled area where a
broad sweep of lawn behind an old stone wall leads, via a variegated holly, through a gap in a tall beech hedge to the sheltered south facing area in front of a 12 ft high mellow brick wall. Here there is a modern conservatory, greenhouses, and supporting buildings including tractor shed and garden store.
There are lavender borders, box hedging, and wild garlic and spring bulbs under another fine copper
beech and a robinia pseudo acacia.
The remainder of the land is principally pasture, with a number of fine parkland trees including
sycamore, horse chestnut, poplar and oak. The whole is on a south facing slope, fringed by
woodland, and is divided by established hedges and post and rail fencing. A stream runs through the middle and a lake has been formed with a summer house and a central island, home to a breeding pair of swans. Both brown and rainbow trout abound, and it is thought that some of the fish run to weights in excess of 5lbs.
