The Story
Sitting out in her garden by the beautiful old walnut tree, the owner of the Cranfield house admires the lush garden she has created.
It was 10 years ago now that she and her husband chose this quiet spot in which to build their perfect home.
Since then she has worked hard on the garden, ensuring it remains a welcoming, green haven to complement the bright, airy home they have enjoyed so much.
We wanted the house to have a good-sized garden, somewhere we could sit and relax in the quiet, she explained.
Building our own home has given us the opportunity to do everything exactly as we want, from ensuring we have a large bedroom to designing good spaces in which to entertain.

SELECT FEATURES

The couple bought, in fact, a former bakery that is now a cottage to the front of where their home was built. This was sold on after they built their existing home in its enormous garden - but not before they had drawn a few ideas from it.
The cottage is about 200 years old and it had a most beautiful inglenook fireplace, she said. We liked the feature so much that we decided to build one in the drawing room of our new house.
The couple carried out lots of research and drew inspiration from other homes they liked too.
A lot of the ideas also came from a big house we had been to look around before starting to think about how we wanted this home to be, she admitted.

SUNSHINE AND SPACE

Today, visitors step into an airy entrance hall, with a natural wood floor and attractive light oak staircase. This leads on through into an elegant dining space.
Rooms throughout the property were designed to be bright and inviting. They were built to a generous size and were given high ceilings with moulded cornices and ceiling roses, she explained.
Our bedroom is large, with an en-suite bathroom. The sun comes in first thing in the morning, filling it with light, she said.

TIME WITH FRIENDS

The space and flow of the house makes it superb for either intimate dinner parties or larger gatherings.
The drawing room also has a very spacious feel, making it ideal for entertaining. We can sit and chat with our guests in there or relax on our own, she said.
We also have a smaller sitting room, with armchairs in it, where it is nice to spend time.
Meals are taken in the kitchen/breakfast room, which is very much a casual, family space, designed for easy living. We have a table in there so it is perfect, she said.

RELAXING AT HOME

Walls and ceilings in the house have been kept light in colour, with the owner bringing in stronger shades through her furniture and curtains. Some spaces have a relaxed country feel while others are more contemporary in design.
This is a very relaxing house to spend time in, she explained. We love being here with friends and family. With all the parking we have at the front, it is very easy to have lots of people visiting us.
In the time we have been here, we have celebrated lots of special birthdays and Christmases from this home.
And she added: I know we will miss that when we leave. I think we will also miss the feeling of being very self-contained here. We come home in the evening, pull into the drive and feel as if we are in our own world, tucked away from everything else.

Ground Floor

From the gated entrance, this attractive family home offers plenty of parking space and a welcoming feel that is reflected in the light and airy interiors. The timber pillar adds character to the porch from where you can step inside the reception hall with its beautifully designed return staircase and oak doors leading off to various rooms. The garden at the Cranfield House was a major draw to the couple. They knew that if they built their home here, they could enjoy outdoor space that was lush and mature.
I do like gardening and we have landscaped and spent lots of time on it, she said. There are lots of beautiful old trees, including the lovely walnut tree. We also have a nice pond with koi carp in it.
She added: It is so quiet out there. In the summer we often sit on the terrace and just enjoy the peace.


Within Easy Reach
Living at Cranfield has suited the owners well. They enjoy the feeling of seclusion while also being able to stroll into the village with its shops, pubs, schools and restaurants. The town of Newport Pagnell is approximately six miles north/west of Cranfield offering further amenities.
This home is conveniently placed for commuters, with great access to the M1 Motorway.
It only takes us 20 minutes to reach Milton Keynes from here, she continued. From there you can catch the train into London, making it easy to commute.
As well as good state schools in the area, nearby Bedford is also known for its private schools, she went on. And there are lots of pleasant places to walk and picnic in the area.
