Situation

Crofthead is located close to the village of Muirkirk which is a small village in East Ayrshire on the north bank of the River Ayr. The Muirkirk and North Lowther Uplands Special Protection Area was set up to protect the surrounding countryside which is an area of scenic beauty and environmental importance. There are excellent transport links via the A70 to the M74.

The village of Muirkirk was developed around its church which was built in 1631, and has strong associations with the Covenanter movement. It is proud of its famous inhabitants the poets Tibby Pagan and John Lapraik, friend of Robert Burns. There is a monument dedicated to another famous inhabitant, "Tar" McAdam. The village is well served by a post office, doctor's surgery, pharmacy, supermarket and primary school. It has a range of local amenities including grouse shooting, horse riding, fishing and golf. Ayrshire is renowned for its numerous golf courses, including the championship courses of Turnberry, Prestwick and Troon. There are also equestrian and sailing facilities throughout Ayrshire.
