Fowey is considered to be one of South Cornwall's most attractive and least spoilt waterside towns. Lying on the west bank of a beautiful natural harbour, it has a long and interesting maritime history with a busy working harbour which still provides the town with a fascinating and ever changing backdrop. There are two local sailing clubs, good repair facilities and a well run Harbour Authority which looks after the day to day workings of the port.
Readymoney Cove is one of the most desirable parts of Fowey, located at the western end of The Esplanade. The cove itself is a beautiful sheltered sandy beach that looks out into the harbour mouth and across to Polruan.
For a small town, Fowey has an excellent range of shops, businesses and amenities catering for most day to day needs. There are a number of restaurants, pubs and several exceptional hotels. The immediate area surrounding Fowey provides some of Cornwall's most spectacular scenery and offers a wonderful network of coastal and inland National Trust footpaths.
There are good road links to the M5 motorway at Exeter via the B3269 and then the A38/A30. Railway connections to London Paddington can be made at Par, Lostwithiel, St. Austell and Bodmin. Daily flights to London Gatwick are available from Newquay Airport.
This exceptionally appealing detached coastal residence is located just yards from the slipway and beach within the extremely picturesque Readymoney Cove.
Facing south-east and overlooking the beach and out into the mouth of Fowey Harbour, Readymoney was originally built as the coach house and stables for the magnificent nearby waterfront Italianate mansion ''Point Neptune'' and was also the home of the world renowned authoress Daphne du Maurier during 1942 and 1943. Du Maurier wrote "Hungry Hill" from the upstairs room whilst she lived here. Her cast iron bath was taken from the house and is a feature in the garden. The house is also bordered by theNational Trust owned Covington Woods and St Catherine's Point, both of which are accessible by footpaths from the cove itself.
The present owners have very recently carried out a large programme of refurbishment works that includes the replacement of the kitchen, utility room and bathrooms and general updating of the décor throughout. The house is alarmed and has CCTV cameras with the benefit of remote viewing via the Internet. Readymoney also benefits from business broadband/satellite TV.
Undoubtedly one of the most attractive features of Readymoney is its large 1.38 acre gardens that extend considerably to the rear of the house and includes an excellent newly refurbished and surfaced outdoor tennis court. The gardens themselves are very mature and comprise of many beautiful interspersed plants, flowering shrubs and trees as well as a burbling stream.
There are a number of bridges over the stream and many meandering pathways up the side of the valley culminating in a superb elevated viewing terrace with views across the Fowey river and Polruan. The garden is filled with many rare and mature specimens and was once featured in Country Life as well as other publications.
From the M5, take the A30 to Bodmin and then take the B3268 south on to the A390. On joining the A390 turn right and after approximately 1 mile turn left signposted Fowey. Follow the road into Fowey and turn left in the town, descending into Lostwithiel Street. The turning into The Esplanade will be found on the right hand side, toward the bottom of the hill. Proceed along the entire length of The Esplanade and turn into Readymoney Cove. Descend into the bottom of the cove and Readymoney will be found on the right-hand side, opposite the slipway to the beach.
