Full description

Tenure: Freehold

There is barely a handful of houses of this calibre in Sheffield. This is a beautiful house which whilst large is still very "liveable" in; many houses such as these were demolished during the post-war period and thus only a few remain. The house which is Grade II listed and dates from 1864/65, has a gas fired central heating installation throughout and sealed unit double glazing virtually throughout. It is ecclesiastic in style and has carved heads inset to the facade to the east and south elevations.

The hall stands in approximately 4 acres to the east and south in the main and the hall is approached by a long tarmacadam/block paved driveway having access via electric gates and terminates in a parking area to the north elevation of the hall.

The Hall is built in coarsed square stone with Ashlar dressings and a hipped plain tile roof built in the gothic revival style during the mid Victorian era, enlarged in 1900 and 1903 for Sir Robert Hadfield who was the Master Cutler.

The wallpaper is unique and all hand printed. Most internal timberwork is by Clive Christian. Deep coving is provided to the majority of reception rooms and most windows are mullioned.

Historical Note Parkhead Hall was formally known as the Woodlands and was designed by John Mitchell Withers for his own use; he moved in, in 1864/65 when only 28 years old. It was then sold to Robert Hadfield when it became Parkhead House and he extended the building and his family remained there for some 40 years. Robert Hadfield sold the property for a staggering £6,750 in 1938 when it became Judges Lodgings. The following year came World War II and it was turned over to the No. 33 RAF group and occupied until September 1944; this group was in charge of barrage balloons. Post War in 1948 the property became an OAP home for 35 gentlemen and they occupied it until 1988 when the OAPs were moved out and the property was sold by auction for £1.2million in June 1989. It was then offices until 2003 when the current owners (only the third family to live there) bought it and turned it back into a family residence.
