Situation
Stags are delighted to offer this exclusive apartment to the market. Torquay, with its seven green hills, nine beaches, palm lined promenade and lively harbour side there is no surprise that it is known as The English Riviera, with spectacular views across Tor Bay and a townscape more reminiscent of Monaco it is easy to imagine oneself living in the south of France rather than South Devon.
Whilst Torquay owes much of its fame and history to its success as a Victorian resort it has not stood still and today it has transformed itself and boasts a deep water marina alongside the harbour, where pavement cafes and boutique shops abound, along with a wide range of top class restaurants. Further afield the regional capital Exeter (approx. 30 minutes by train) provides all of the big brand shopping and dining experiences that one could wish for. Exeter's international Airport offers a wide variety of business and leisure destinations within Europe and beyond.
The Manor House Apartments are situated in between the villages of Cockington and Chelston and above Cockington Valley, a short stroll inland from the beaches, coves and marinas of Torquay, in a largely residential area. Chelston itself has two shopping streets where you will find a doctors' surgery, vet, butcher, Co- operative food store, chemist and Post Office. The train station is a short distance away and there is a local bus service which runs within the area.
Description
The Manor House was built in 1867 for the world famous engineer William Froude (1810-1879) who was a pupil of the renowned Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was responsible for the Bristol and Exeter railway as its chief engineer. He fell in love with the West Country and decided to settle in Torquay which is when he had this Gothic mansion constructed as his family home and where he also indulged his passion for sailing in Tor Bay, sheltered and protected from the prevailing South Westerly wind. Froude took his skill as an engineer, and passion for all things nautical, to a new dimension, and more modest fame in his own right, pioneering ship model research with the construction of the first experimental test tank for the Admiralty. A fact recorded by the Torbay Civic Society Blue Plaque to the left of the front door.
The mansion has since been restored and thoughtfully converted into classical apartments retaining many of the impressive period features. This significant ground floor apartment will afford its new owners with a comfortable quality of life which begins as you drive towards the property remote controlled gates allowing access to the parking area where the two off street, secure parking spaces await you, with further visitors' parking.
The apartment itself benefits from the grand proportions that you would expect from such a landmark building. That said the fusion of modern design and materials creates a highly unusual property. One of the many noteworthy features is the impressive reception accommodation, for those that regularly entertain or perhaps need to accommodate large furniture then this property will fit the bill.
Accommodation
The apartment is either accessed via the impressive coded entry system (with entry phone), which operates two large Gothic style timber doors opening into the breathtaking communal hallway with its truly impressive flying staircase or via the large private terrace to your own front door.
From the communal entrance hall, a front door gives way to a vestibule with plenty of space for coats and boots. Beyond this is the drawing room, with its period fireplace and elegant shuttered windows, with views to the sea. The drawing room has double glass doors opening out onto its own large private terrace. High ceilings and numerous period features create a real sense of style and space, this area is easily big enough to accommodate a large table should you not wish to dine in the sun room, which is perfect for entertaining and flows onto the terrace.
Off the dining area is the master bedroom with a period fireplace and en suite bathroom, with a window and double glass doors opening out onto the private terraced area taking advantage of the views.
Going back through the drawing room you will find a cloakroom/wc on your right and straight in front of you are doors opening into the kitchen area. The kitchen is fitted to a high standard with a double oven and integral fridge /freezer, washer/dryer and dishwasher. A doorway out through the kitchen leads into a large conservatory which can also be accessed from the drawing room area. The conservatory has high vaulted ceilings and is an ideal spot for relaxing and taking in the surrounding scenery. The conservatory also opens out onto the private terraced area.
From a door leading off the conservatory you will find bedroom two. Bedroom two is a double bedroom with a large window overlooking the front of the premises and a door leading out to the side of the property. Bedroom two is also en suite and is perfect for guests.
