Glen Tower Manor has a wonderful waterfront position on the Holy Loch looking towards the Firth of Clyde. Hunter's Quay is the main base of Western Ferries who operate a frequent service to Gourock which has a rail link to Glasgow.
In the 1908 Olympic Games the 12 metre class race took place at Hunter's Quay, although most of the sailing took place on the Solent. Only two yachts entered the class: Mouchette from the Royal Liverpool Yacht Club and Hera from the Royal Glasgow Club. They were allowed to race on the Upper Clyde for convenience. Hera won. Today, yachting is still a regular feature of the area with the Holy Loch Marina only a short walk away.
Dunoon is a busy market town which first blossomed in the 19th century to become a Clyde seaside resort. Throughout the summer months many tourists still visit Dunoon and enjoy a walk along the promenade as a cruise down the Clyde. It offers good local amenities including a hospital, library, leisure centre and a supermarket. Sporting activities abound in the area include excellent sailing, golfing and both freshwater and sea fishing.
Glen Tower Manor is a magnificent B-listed manor house which presently trades well as a 4 star hotel, known as the Hunters Quay Hotel. It is thought to date from around 1870 when it was built as a private dwelling, known as Claver House. It was substantially extended around 1900 and offers an idiosyncratic mix of Scottish, French and Italian influences. Most notably, a square tower rises above its white facade with bay windows and conical turret.
The interiors are equally as lavish with ornate white and polychrome plasterwork, carved doors and a Corinthian screen in the main reception hallway. Its accommodation is built under a slate roof and comprises nearly 8500 sq ft over three levels.
On the ground floor, overlooking the water, are a formal dining room, a sitting room and a drawing room with a unique Arts and Crafts fireplace. The drawing room is presently used as the bar. The rear of the house ground floor accommodation includes an office, a laundry room, a pantry and a commercial kitchen with utility room and larder. The manager's apartment can be accessed from here and offers self contained accommodation over two levels with a sitting room, a newly fitted kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom.
The first floor has six en suite bedrooms whilst the second floor has four further en suite bedrooms. In all there are 10 letting bedrooms and two further bedrooms in the owner's accommodation.
Over the years the roof has had significant investment. The heating was replaced in 2005 and the wiring was partially upgraded in 2007.
The grounds extend to some 1.36 acres and include a formal garden, wooded hill garden and a driveway with parking space for many cars.
