THE RIVER TORRIDGE
Instantly recognisable to the readers of Tarka the Otter the River Torridge ranks as one of the finest Westcountry Rivers. The river rises on the Woolley Moors near Bradworthy in Devon, meanders through fantastic North Devon countryside where its tributaries the Lew and Okement join, before meeting the Taw at Appledore and then flowing into the Bristol Channel.
The River Torridge is well known for its runs of salmon and being spate dependent the best months are April, May and September. The sea trout fishing is prolific with fish up to 10lbs entering the river during high spring tides after Easter with smaller "school peal" of up to 3lbs arriving in July. A good head of natural brown trout provides fishing during the summer months.

In March 2013 two salmon weighing in excess of 22lbs and 25lbs respectively were caught on the adjacent, upstream beat within 10 days of each other.
From Okehampton take the A386 signposted Great Torrington. On reaching Great Torrington, continue through the town on the A386 signposted Bideford. Continue for approximately 2 miles along this road and the fishing commences on the right hand side opposite the entrance to the Beam Quarry.
