Property Description

Full description

Tenure: Freehold

Built in the early 1900s Robinwood Cottage is a remodelled Arts + Crafts style family home that has been recently completely refurbished to a high standard. Until 1828 Kingston Hill (or Turnpike Road as it was known then) ran through the grounds of where Robinwood Cottage now stands, in fact the landowner had so great an influence that, in that year, the path of it was changed to where we find it today to make room for the later construction of Robinwood Cottage. Kingston Hill woods nearby have been historically linked to many a tale of highwaymen, the most infamous were two by the name of Jerry Abershaw and Richard Ferguson known as ‘Galloping Dick’. After a period of being in direct competition with each other, in work and also their love lives with an disreputable lass named Nancy, decided that life would be far more profitable working the woods of Kingston Hill together.

Research has uncovered that on 2nd June 1922 one Herbert Harry Arding purchased Robinwood Cottage, who then subsequently extended the property to the size we find today. The plans were submitted and the building works undertaken by Arding & Hobbs Ltd. of 83 Lavender Hill. Clearly the building company formed part of, or bore some relationship to, the large department store found in Clapham today (currently trading as Debenhams). One could assume that Henry Arding was either an owner or stakeholder of that firm of the same name.

Kingston Vale is conveniently located close to Kingston Town Centre with its excellent shopping facilities, as is the A3 trunk road offering fast access to Central London and both Gatwick and Heathrow airports via the M25 motorway network. Train stations at Norbiton and New Malden provide frequent services to Waterloo with its underground links to points throughout the City. The immediate area offers a wide range of recreational facilities including three golf courses, tennis and squash clubs. Richmond Park being within a few minutes walking distance is an area of outstanding beauty, provides a picturesque setting in which to picnic, go horse riding, jogging or just take a leisurely walk. Theatres at Richmond and Wimbledon are also popular alternatives to the West End together with an excellent choice of restaurants. There are also numerous public, state and international schools for all ages.
