Dotted along the coastline westwards there are a number of wonderful beaches below the south west coastal footpath including Sennen Cove about 8 miles away, now renowned for its surfing break. The popular resort of St. Ives, home to the Tate St. Ives and the Barbara Hepworth museum, is about 8 miles away on the north coast.

History
Clarence Cottage as it stands today is believed to have been built at the beginning of the 19th century together with most of the terraced houses forming Clarence Place itself. The landwas owned by the Duke of Clarence who it is understood owned much of Penzance. The Duke was with Nelson at English Harbour, Antigua, and the house is a copy of the Clarence Cottage in English Harbour with the colonialstyle facade added circa 1800. Whether the Duke of Clarence ever lived in Clarence Cottage, or indeed whether Nelson ever visited is unknown, but certainly the news of the Battle of Trafalgar landed in Penzance first


Description

Clarence Cottage is a classic example of elegant Georgian architecture, and occupies a wonderfully secluded, quiet and private position behind walled gardens off the end of Clarence Place.

On approaching Penzance, follow signs to Lands End/A30.
After several roundabouts, turn left at the roundabout signposted for West Cornwall Hospital. After about half a mile, and at a sharp right bend, turn right into a narrow entrance into Clarence Terrace. Continue ahead into Clarence Place and Clarence Cottage is found at the end of the terrace.
