6 bedroom detached house for sale

Dragon, Monmouthshire

Property Description

Key features

Full description

Located on the border of the sought-after Monmouthshire area, this contemporary residence enjoys a unique position nestling into the hillside, and surrounded by over an acre and a half of gardens and Forestry Commission woodland. Inside you will find six bedrooms, a fabulous drawing room with gallery and five further reception rooms. Outside there are magnificent views over Wentwood Reservoir and ample parking.

Relaxing in the hot tub on the terrace, the owners watch the birds swooping above the lake and soaring off over the tree-lined valley.
From their spectacular position, close to Llanvaches, in Monmouthshire, it is as if the world rolls away before them, presenting them with their own breathtaking corner of nature.
It was just under eight years ago now that they oversaw the creation of six-bedroom Dragon, with its bright, modern spaces and vast picture windows to capture the surroundings.
It is an absolutely unique spot - a quite fantastic location, said the owner. The house itself is very large, with a wonderful continuity of space, and an emphasis on the views throughout. It is also suffused with light.

While the property was newly built for the family, and had a stunning, contemporary interior, its exterior was carefully designed to blend beautifully into its picturesque setting.
Inside, it is modern but it is very easy to live in. In addition to having all the large windows, the colour scheme is very light.
We have huge limestone tiles downstairs and the walls are white. The doors are all beech wood and the kitchen is chestnut. We have lots of mirrors and crystal. This all makes the house very light indeed, he explained.
Upon entering the property, visitors find themselves in the dramatic hall, with its galleried landings up above and high ceiling, which goes up into a tower.
In the centre of the lake there is a tower and this feature of the house echoes that, he explained.

The kitchen, which flows into the dining space, and then on into a sitting area, with comfortable seating, is at the heart of the house, and is where the family often find themselves.
The other main 'wow factor' room is the drawing room, with its double-height ceiling, which goes right up into the roof and has high windows, he said.
This is a very peaceful, serene room, where you can take in the views and look up at the clouds. It also goes out on to the terrace, where we have the hot tub.
This room, in particular, is fabulous for parties. Doors can be opened wide and guests can stroll in and out.
We had an incredible party for our daughter's 21st birthday, when a friend who is involved with lighting came and set up some laser equipment. There was a bit of mist on the lake and everyone stood and watched the colours over the water. It was just amazing.

For a family who enjoy entertaining and welcoming overnight guests, Dragon has been everything they had hoped.
We held a wedding here and seated 40 people at a long table. We had the ceremony in the drawing room and the meal in the kitchen breakfast room, and photographs were taken out on the deck, he remembered.
Of the six bedrooms, three are just enormous, and were designed with their own dressing rooms and en-suite bathrooms.
The main bedroom is wonderful. It has a view out over the lake, a huge bathroom and doors that open on to a balcony, where the barrier is glass.

When the couple moved to Dragon, their four children were all living at home, and the house was ideal as the hub of all their activities.
It has been an absolutely lovely place to live - well-placed for everything we need and very spacious, while also being comfortable to live in and easy to maintain, said the owner.
The location is just unbelievable. Despite having these incredible views before us, we are very sheltered and it is extremely still. There's also something about a location like this that makes it seem much lighter than in other places.
He said they would miss everything about the house, but particularly the views.
In the distance we can see the Bristol channel and the green hills of Somerset. It really is spectacular.

Completed just under eight years ago, Dragon is a contemporary home built with character and designed so that the wonderful views can be enjoyed from all the main rooms. Entering the property through arched oak doors into a generous inner porch, the space and contemporary character offered by this unique residence starts to become apparent. Double doors open into a cavernous entrance hall which is dominated by a vaulted ceiling, the height of which is accentuated by a feature twelve sided tower which has been designed to display a large chandelier. Three built in display alcoves, a beautiful natural stone tiled floor with under floor heating and the stunning bespoke maple staircase all add to this glamorous space. The drawing room is spectacular and boasts a vaulted ceiling with ambient lighting, a minstrel gallery, an open brick fireplace, a stunning glazed gable wall and numerous double height windows allowing lots of natural light to flood through. The drawing room could easily accommodate a dining table if required, while mood lighting set into the stone tiled floor and beams can create whatever ambience you desire.

The kitchen/dining room is capacious and offers not only enough room for the bespoke kitchen with granite work surfaces, but also space for the largest of dining tables. At the far end of this room, a sitting area features a semi-circular wall with windows along its length, which has been designed to make the most of the far reaching views. The same stone tiled floor with under floor heating covers this whole space and also continues through to the sizeable utility/laundry room. Adjoining the kitchen is a separate sitting room which has an attractive open brick fireplace and views of the reservoir. On the opposite side of the reception hall, an inner hallway leads to a well-proportioned games/cinema room which has direct access onto the rear garden, and two further reception rooms both currently used as 'his and hers' offices. One of these rooms features another semi-circular wall, whilst the other could be used in conjunction with an adjacent shower room so as to create another en-suite bedroom if required. Both of these rooms are generously proportioned and large enough to be used as reception rooms depending on your requirements. Also accessed off this inner hall is a large cloakroom presented in a contemporary style and the integral double garage with electric up and over doors.

The bespoke maple staircase rises to a galleried landing with a twelve sided tower above and provides access onto the minstrel gallery, as well as to the bedrooms and family bathroom. The master suite is vast and enjoys another feature semi-circular wall with panoramic views, a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams and walk-in 'his and hers' dressing rooms. As you would expect, the en-suite does not disappoint and features a free standing bath, two glass basins, a double shower and double doors to a Juliette balcony which open up directly onto a view of the reservoir. The guest bedroom affords a similar view to the master suite and benefits from its own en-suite bathroom and dressing room, along with a vaulted ceiling with exposed beam. The third bedroom is capacious and has similar features, and unusually its own separate entrance via a timber bridge from the terraced garden, ideal for teenagers or for an au pair. Concluding this level are three further well presented bedrooms and a contemporary family bathroom.

The property is accessed via a pair of electric gates and a sweeping tarmac and brick paved drive leading to the front entrance. The driveway can provide parking for numerous cars and eventually guides to an integral double garage with remote controlled up and over doors. From the drive, a series of stone steps flow to the terraced side garden, which is laid predominantly to lawn and features a wooded area to the top. This area concludes with a level lawned garden, from where the spectacular views can be enjoyed over the roof top of the property.

There is access to the rear garden from the lawned terrace, or via the extensive timber deck which is located on the opposite side of the house. The deck incorporates a built in hot tub, which directly overlooks the reservoir and is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine on a summer afternoon. The very private rear garden has an extensive brick paved terrace with steps leading onto the level lawn, where there is an attractive semi-circular seating area designed with al-fresco dining in mind. With mature trees to two sides, terraced gardens and the house to the remaining sides, the rear garden not only offers privacy but provides a real sense of seclusion.

We have put a lot of effort into the garden and ensured there are plenty of interesting features. The old brick used in the house has been repeated in the walling, said the owner.

The property overlooks Wentwood Reservoir, where trout fishing can be enjoyed and with Wentwood Forest to the rear there are copious numbers of walks through the property's attractive surroundings. The nearest village is the small parish of Llanvaches which is less than half a mile away and has its own church. For golfers there are several courses within twenty minutes including the Celtic Manor Golf Course (7 miles) and St Pierre Golf Club (7 miles). The sought-after market town of Usk (7 miles) can be reached in less than 10 minutes and offers numerous boutique shops and public houses. Monmouth is less than 20 minutes away and the market town of Abergavenny less than 30 minutes. The M4 is also close at hand and can be reached in around 15 minutes (6 miles).
