The Story

Climbing up the spiral staircase, within the unique turret with its great expanses of glass, the owner of Iron Bridge appreciates the outlook across her picturesque surroundings.
The exquisite house has been completely transformed, and is today a landmark in its own right, standing beside the historic iron bridge.
"I just fell in love with it the moment I saw it," she recalled. "It was sitting in the most amazing location, right on the river - every room and every bedroom had a view of the water.
"We could see how we could open the house up and make it so much lighter, with a lot more glass. We have worked hard on it. It is now very modern indeed."
And she added: "The property also has an eight-stable block and sits in 10 acres of land, including two fields and some woodland.
"In one of the fields we have a very pretty lake, as well as a secret lake in the woodland."

Local folklore has it that the bridge was built by Lord Tredegar in 1829. It was constructed to provide access for horse drawn vehicles from Ryperra Castle to and from the church at Lower Machen.
"The house was built in 1829 and was where the gatekeeper lived," she explained. "We have extended and rebuilt it with sympathy for the old building but also giving it a bright, modern feel."
She continued: "We added a turret to the hallway and put a sweeping staircase into it. This is now a real feature of the house. It comes up on to a glass landing, which overlooks the lake and the geese."

Downstairs, a chic, ceramic floor has been laid throughout. Each room in the house has been given a stylish and distinct contemporary finish.
The kitchen was bespoke, created by Alexander Bullock. This has walnut units and black granite work surfaces. Similar fittings can also be seen in the communications room and utility room.
"We have recently had a large sun room added too," she continued. "This is about 10ft from the river and we can now sit in there and watch the water and wildlife.
"We also have a very spacious drawing room that you step down into, with three very large arched, floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as bi-folding doors on to the garden.
"There is also a wonderful wood-burner, which is just fabulous when it is roaring in the winter." The room also benefits from under floor heating.

With a formal dining room that seats up to 14 people and five spacious bedrooms, there is always room for family members and friends to visit.
While the master bedroom has a dressing room and sumptuous bathroom, complete with enormous shower enclosure, with seating at either end, another bedroom has an integral "snail" shower.
"Every bedroom has a lovely view," she added.
Iron Bridge, she continued, is splendid for parties. As well as all the land for setting up marquees and garden tables, there is a magnificent entertaining terrace, where guests can relax and absorb the stunning surroundings.
"You can keep horses and ride here and you can fish in the river," she said. "There is so much to enjoy about this place - from barbecues with friends to large parties with lots of guests.
"We also just enjoy the tranquillity; watching the kingfishers nesting in the riverbank and squirrels in the trees, or taking our granddaughter down to the river to skim stones or simply to have a picnic."
