Fir Trees is a most appealing and picturesque Grade II listed farmhouse. Dating from the 17th century. The present front was added circa 1610 which provides the pleasing facade we have today. Large windows set in brick elevations under a clay tiled roof are enhanced by a 19th century double height porch. On entering the property there are a wealth of architectural features including the original timber frame with exposed beams and open fireplaces. Fir Trees was enlarged in the 20th century in keeping with the style of the original house. This provides overall well balanced accommodation and makes a good family house.
The reception rooms are large with the drawing room having French doors opening onto the rear garden. The neighbouring kitchen and dining room also overlook and have access into the gardens. A large sitting room / breakfast room at the front of the house has a large open fireplace with a wood burner. This room enjoys double aspect with views of the drive. The bedroom accommodation provides three bedrooms with en suite bath/shower rooms and a further two bedrooms which share a shower room. The floors throughout the grounds floor are either quarry tiled, oak or slate. This provides practical living. The bedrooms are all rooms of character with exposed timbers and high ceilings exposing the original roofline.
Adjacent to the house is a coach house which provides very useful ancillary accommodation. The ground floor is arranged as garaging for four cars. Two of the spaces are in tandem and were designed for use as garaging for cars or storage for a boat. To the rear is a hall which provides access to a shower room with plumbing and sink to be used as a utility room and an office which can be used as a studio or a gym. Stairs lead up to a large two bedroom first floor flat.
An ornate pair of automated iron gates open onto the brick and flagstone drive. This leads in front of the property and is bordered by formal garden and open paddocks. The drive opens into a large parking/turning area to the west of the house and in front of the coach house. A further area of gravel hard standing provides additional parking space and access to the paddocks. The gardens surround the house. The south facing facade of Fir Trees has both white and blue climbing wisteria. Bordered by lawn the front has flowering lilac, magnolia, apple and ceanothus trees which all provide a lovely variety of colour. As the gardens wrap round the eastern elevation of the house, a large eucalyptus and a magnolia tree provide privacy to the approach to the house.
The rear garden is a large level lawn with a central seating are on flagstones. At the northern end of the garden a raised terrace provides a further seating area and is bordered by an ornamental pond and a summer house complete with barbeque. A brick path leads back to the rear of the house and this is bordered by a box hedge planted in a zig zag with lavender providing colour and scent. A pergola covered by climbing rose and wisteria provides a focal point. To the east of the formal garden is a wild flower meadow with a variety of trees including beech, birch and fir. There is an implement store.
There is a stable yard and hay store to the north of the house, comprising a range of timber stables with eight loose boxes including a foaling box. There is a tack room, feed store and a hay store. In front of the stable yard stands the outdoor school.
The paddocks are arranged as permanent pasture, enclosed by post and rail fencing with the benefit of a field shelter to the west.
