Enjoying evening drinks with friends as the lights from Vernette twinkle on the water or waiting for guests to arrive by boat for a special outdoor lunch - summers at Vernette are simply a joy.
The delightful property in sought-after Oulton Broad has been in the current owner's family for almost 50 years now but in recent times has been substantially extended, renovated and given a breathtaking, new, contemporary finish.
Set in stunning gardens, and with its own separate three-bedroom cottage, as well as a wet and a dry boathouse, the waterside home has been redesigned to make the most of its incredible position.
We really have been very, very lucky to be able to live in such a wonderful place, somewhere that is fabulous for entertaining, she said. We have had sit down meals for up to 30 guests, a marquee on the lawn and barbecues at the end of the garden by the water's edge.
The couple began by setting to work on the superb gardens. They then transformed the 19th Century coach house into a guest cottage before starting on the main house.
Here, large rooms now boast great expanses of glass, which bring the incredible natural views right into the home, and allow the owners to soak up the scenery.
We doubled the size of the existing house, and gave it a villa style, she explained.
We wanted to emphasise the outlook on to the garden as it goes down towards the broad. We added the large windows, terrace and balcony - really everything we could think of to make the most of the spectacular views.
All the ground floor rooms now overlook Oulton Broad. Guests flow easily between the living spaces and out through large doors on to the first terrace.
The kitchen is a lovely room. Most people who visit us are close friends, and they come straight round the back and head to the fridge to find the wine or beer!
The dining room, where eight to 10 people can sit down together, was designed to jut right out into the garden.
You feel as if you are outside, she said. It is charming at night when all the lights are on in the garden.
It is also excellent on the terrace. As the garden is south-facing, we can be out there from first thing in the morning to last thing at night. We have barbecues out there in the summer and heaters for when it's not so warm.
The owners can sit and look out over the water as they enjoy their meals. The bedrooms also capture the spectacular scenery, with panoramic views across the broad towards the Suffolk Wildlife Park.
We see herons, otters and kingfishers, she said. We also see all sorts of things happening on the water - sailing boats, wind surfers. On a good wind, they hold races up here, which are great fun to see.
She added Sometimes, in the evening, we take a bottle of wine and head out on to the water ourselves, in our rowing boat - and we just bob about as the sun goes down.
Both the master bedroom and the main guest room have balconies, as well as en-suite bathrooms: I often find guests sitting on their balcony in the sunshine, writing letters and having a cup of coffee, she said.
The joy of waterside life is shared with friends as often as possible. From sit down meals for up to 30 people to picnics on the lawn, there is a long history of celebration here.
I had my 21st birthday here when this was my parents' home, the owner remembered. They hired a marquee for 100 people and we set it up on the lawn we now use for croquet.
She went on: At the end of the year, we usually try to organise a barbecue at the bottom of the garden. We have a summer house there and people have to arrive by boat, which is quite fun.
Vernette exudes a commanding presence with electric gates opening to reveal a sweeping driveway, heightening the sense of grandeur and raising your expectations as to what lies within. Stepping through the glazed entrance door you find yourself in the beautiful reception hall. A staircase ascends to the galleried landing, while doors guide through to the main reception space. You will note the cloakroom and office before moving into the sitting room/snug and garden room/dining room. Glazed windows allow an abundance of natural light to flood through, while also offering views of the glorious garden and river beyond. From here you will locate the family room, which boasts an attractive fireplace creating a warm and cosy ambience and French doors opening out to the elevated terrace. At the heart of the home is the stylish kitchen, a plethora of matching cabinets provide ample storage space and from here you can enjoy delightful vistas of the garden. Completing this floor is a useful utility room.

DETACHED COACH HOUSE

Returning to the reception hall you note the beautiful dining room and the dual aspect kitchen, which is fitted with a range of contemporary cabinets offering plenty of storage, an ideal spot informal lunches and gatherings.
As you climb the stairs to the first floor galleried landing, three inviting bedrooms and the family bathroom are waiting to be discovered. The coach house also has its own detached single garage, a lovely enclosed garden and an outside brick built potting shed.
SETTING THE SCENE
Vernette occupies a privileged position within the heart of the Broads. The gardens can be accessed from every aspect of this beautiful home making it ideal for entertaining and the close proximity to the Broads allows the owners to see an abundance of wildlife including kingfishers, otters and deer.
From their grounds, the owners often enjoy the annual Oulton Broad Regatta, watching the fireworks explode above the water.
The garden has been landscaped to create contrast between the expanses of lawn and the mature plants and trees. There are plenty of places for guests to sit out and admire the views when they visit, from the raised terraces to the sun-soaked benches.
There is also a private island, which is very pretty, and where my husband has built a bridge across, she said.
The river has been the perfect place to while away the long summer afternoons while within the grounds there is also private mooring and slipway offering additional recreational facilities.
