15 Fournier St is a handsome corner house at the junction of Fournier St and Wilkes St and directly opposite Hawkesmoor's Christchurch, completed in 1729. The large glazed weaver's attic looks out onto the spire of the church, giving an upward feel of light and scale, unusual in the heart of London.15 Fournier St is a Grade-II Listed and an important house in the sought-after Spitalfields Conservation area. Built in the 1720's the house follows the traditional design of generous mansard and basement floors, with three principal floors in between. High ceilings, tall doors, and plenty of glass, make 15 a light and airy house. Rooms are the typical early Georgian mix of large and small, easily adapted to contemporary living.

The house has a long history. Built for a wealthy silk merchant, the attic floor retains the crossbeams used to hang the threads from the looms. In the 19th century, the ground floor was turned into a Mission Hall, first for the conversion of the Jews, and then for seaman coming in on the ships at Limehouse. The spacious entrance floor of the house has been retained as part of the changing architectural story of the building.

The house was divided into flats in the 1970's. The present owners worked with The Spitalfields Historic Building Trust to obtain all the necessary consents to return the house to a single dwelling. The Trust then undertook the rebuild.

This painstaking work included a five-floor staircase built in situ by one craftsman using the original drawings. In addition, original features such as full panelling and shutters have been refurbished or renewed, while using the opportunity to fully rewire, replumb, fireproof, and heat the house to modern standards.

In particular, the basement has been dug out and tanked, adding underfloor heating beneath an English limestone floor, and opening a new lightwell up to the street, to create an open versatile space that could be used as a big kitchen or as a self-contained studio room.

The present owners have put in concealed plumbing and drainage and gas outlets on each floor, allowing the new owner a rare opportunity to customise the house as desired without further intrusive or expensive building works.

Situation
Close to Spitalfields Market and a short walk from the Square Mile, the area is a lively mix of small shops, restaurants and bars. Columbia Rd flowermarket and Shoreditch are within easy reach. City Airport can be reached by taxi or from Shorditch DLR in 20mins. Liverpool Street station and Aldgate East Underground are both nearby. Crossrail will soon connect Spitalfields to the West End in one stop.
