Location

Auchenross is set in a large mature garden on the edge of "The Ross", an exclusive hamlet just outside the popular village of Comrie. There are open fields around and views to the mountains beyond.

Description

Auchenross is Category B listed and described in its listing as "an Arts and Crafts mansion of the Voysey School built with Auchenheath dressings around the main entrance under slated roofs".

The house was designed by the architects T. Oliphant Foster and Percy W. Lovell of Westminster and dates from 1909. Plans of the house were included in the Royal Exhibition in 1910. The original coloured architects' drawings remain in the house.

The facades are distinctive with a steep roofline, front facing gables and curving roof ends. Internally the property offers extensive and well laid out accommodation. There are bay windows to the principal rooms, which retain many original features such as Arts and Crafts door furniture, timber beamed ceilings and period fireplaces. In recent years the house has been upgraded to a high standard. Most of the wooden windows were replaced and the plumbing and wiring was renewed.

A studded timber front door with a coat of arms above to vestibule with coat cupboard and WC off. Double half glazed doors to reception hall with many original features such as parquet flooring and open fireplace with wooden mantel and brick surround.

The en suite bathroom has been beautifully finished with limestone tiles and has a shower, bath, WC and twin wash hand basins. There is a family bathroom and a shower room.

On the second floor is a billiard room at the end of the corridor. There is also a bathroom, a bedroom and a gym.

Outside
Auchenross is set in a large private garden with extensive lawns which is given shelter and amenity by the mature trees and rhododendrons around the edge of the property.

The trees comprise a wonderful variety of broadleaves and conifers. The driveway leads through banks of rhododendrons to a large gravel sweep at the front door. There is a second smaller gravel sweep at the back door where there is a high quality timber built garage which is well insulated and has space for four cars.

Directions

From Stirling, Comrie can be reached by taking the A9 towards Auchterarder and then the A822 through Braco. Take the left hand turning onto the B827, a spectacular road which leads over the hills to Comrie. Then follow the directions as above.
