The Story

Watching the colours of the landscape changing out in the glorious vistas from Woodrising has been one of the greatest pleasures of life at the magnificent period home.
The 10 bedroom house is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at Woldingham and overlooks the South Downs.
"This house is set in over 4 acres of its own land in a wonderful position on The Ridge," said the owner. "From here you can see across the grounds and over the beautiful Downs."
The house is also just a short walk from the village and approximately a mile and a half from the station.
"The location here really could not be any better," he added.

FLEXIBLE ACCOMMODATION

The imposing Victorian home was built in 1898 and has been home to the current owner since 1984.
"We bought it because we knew it would be ideal for an extended family - it had a great deal of potential," he explained.
Since moving to the property, he has converted the top floor into self-contained guest accommodation. This is currently arranged as two self-contained studio flats and a two-bedroom apartment. There is also another bedroom on this level, together with a bathroom.
"We have had lodgers up there in the past but these areas could be ideal for teenagers, au pairs, nannies or members of the family seeking their own space. There is a separate front door for this part of the house."
Additional flexibility is brought to Woodrising by the presence of further separate accommodation, in the form of a cottage.
"This is now a lovely cottage. It has three bedrooms and bright, airy accommodation over two floors. Again, it could be used to generate an income or for extended family members."

PERIOD FEATURES

The main house requires restoration, according to the owner, but he said it still embodies much of its original charm.
There is a huge reception hall, with ornate pillars, and an original staircase, which leads up to a galleried landing and an exquisite stained glass window. There is also a basement.
"Rooms in the house have high ceilings and beautiful plasterwork. There are some lovely bay windows and one room, which has what looks like a panelled wall but it is, in fact, stucco."

GRAND PARTIES

Woodrising is a home that was built for entertaining, with some very fine formal areas, where grand dinner parties and balls would once have been held.
French windows open out on to terraces and the gardens, which could be just as suitable for parties and functions.
There would be plenty of space for marquees and the tennis court could once again become a focal point for long summer afternoons spent with friends.
"This is a very unusual and interesting house, which has a great deal to offer," he said. "There are lots of different ways it could be enjoyed - it has lots of potential."
