Location

Craigmote enjoys a beautiful location on the banks of the River Doon, within the grounds of the historic Nether Auchendrane estate, about 2 miles south of Ayr. The property is sheltered by a wide range of mature evergreen and deciduous trees and has beautiful landscaped gardens, bordered to the east by the river. The gardens and woodland extend to approximately 6.7 acres. Craigmote has arguably the finest position within the estate grounds.
Ayr is Ayrshire's foremost town and as such offers a good range of high street shops, supermarkets, recreational and professional facilities. In addition there are a number of well-renowned restaurants and excellent private schooling at Wellington School for children of age 3 to 18.
The Ayrshire coast is famous worldwide for golf with championship courses at Royal Troon, Turnberry (the venue for the Scottish Open in 2009) and Prestwick, all of which are within easy reach. There is also excellent sailing with yachting marinas at Troon and further up the coast at Largs and Inverkip. There is excellent shooting on nearby estates.
Historical Note
The estate of Auchendrane dates back to before the 14th century, when the lands belonged to Robert Brown. Brown supported the losing side in Robert the Bruce's War of Independence and his lands were confiscated by Bruce and awarded to his loyal supporter, Henry Annan. The Rowallan Mures acquired Auchendrane soon afterwards and this saw the commencement of a long running feud between the Mures and the Cassillis Kennedys of Culzean, which ended in the lands of Auchendrane once again being forfeited to the crown. The part of the old estate within which Craigmote is located was sold off in the first half of the 17th century to the family of Blair of Blair, and became known as Blairstoun. In 1698 John Mure, former Provost of Ayr, bought and restored Blairstoun. At that time, the estate was described as having "ane high tower, with laigh buildings, surrounded with good orchards and gardens, parks and good corn fields". The Cathcart family came into possession of the property through marriage in 1793 of David Cathcart, later Lord Alloway, with Mary Mure. Their son bought back the barony lands, reuniting the original estate, and changing the name of Blairstoun back to Auchendrane.
