The Bath House is an important and iconic landmark building situated on the sea front in the centre of Cromer with outstanding views over the superb Victorian Pier (currently being restored) and out to sea.
The building which has recently been lavishly restored, has a fascinating history, very much bound up in Cromer's development as one of the most fashionable seaside resorts in England. As early as 1792 the Universal British Directory reported that: "Cromer has for some years past been a summer resort of much genteel company, on account, as well of the beauty and pleasantness of the country about it as of the salubrity of the air and the convenience of the place for bathing." Jane Austen, for example, wrote in Emma that Cromer was "The best of all the sea bathing places". The patronage of Cromer by 19th century writers has been acknowledged in the artworks undertaken as part of Cromer regeneration (2002-2006) quotations by Austen, Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Gaskill and Algernon Swinburne have been immortalised in stone inscriptions on the sea front and in the town centre. At the height of its popularity, during much of the 19th century Cromer was renowned throughout Europe as one of the places to be seen.
Originally built in 1814 as a subscription reading room, bathing facilities were added in 1824 and water was pumped from the sea into tanks so that gentleman could come from far afield to take the waters. The present building essentially dates from 1836. For many years it was the family home of schoolmaster Simeon Simons until 1867 when it was sold to Henry Rust. The next owner was brewer and wine merchant James Chapman who in 1872 converted the building into a hotel and added the western wing for use as a billiard room. The property remained a hotel until it was acquired by the current owners in 1999 and who embarked on a thorough programme of restoration and refurbishment.
