Historical Context

'Longfield' was built circa 1965 on what previously formed part of Hammond's Nurseries. Isaac Hammond gave the land on which it stands to his son, Ian, as a wedding present. Most of the houses to the North and East of 'Longfield' were also built on nursery land after it closed down in the 1970's. Our vendors purchased the current property in 1976.
'Longfield' was so called because it stands on what was the 'long field' where daffodils were grown. For many years after, daffodils continued to grow along the lawn in straight lines and most of the mature shrubs were chosen and planted by a nurseryman.

Architectural Context

The architect's plans for the house show it facing down the garden, but at some stage before building it was turned clockwise to make maximum use of the sea views across the fields. These views are now glimpses because trees have matured.
The open ground to the southwest belongs to Hampshire County Council and is run as a Nature Study Centre. There is a great deal of wildlife to be seen, badgers in particular. In the early days the land was laid out to playing fields but in the 1990's this was substantially landscaped. This involved building banks along the side of 'Longfield'.
