Full description

Harley House is a fine period house believed to date back to the late 16th century. Constructed predominantly with a timber frame and rendered colour washed elevations under a neat tiled roof, the building is Grade II Listed, considered to be of architectural and historical merit. The present owners have undertaken sympathetic alterations and extensions in recent years including a new hand crafted kitchen/breakfast room with an excellent range of storage cupboards, central island unit, a four oven Aga and wood and granite work surfaces. However, the house retains many period features including open fireplaces, wood flooring and exposed timbers.

The house enjoys a private setting at the end of minor ‘No Through Road’ and is approached through remote controlled wrought iron gates, which lead to a gravelled parking area and a newly constructed garage block. There is an annexe with sitting room, kitchen and cloakroom, a stable, two loose boxes, feed and machinery stores, and an open bay cart lodge. There is also an enclosed heated swimming pool with a paved surround and a thatched pool house with boiler, filtration unit and a wet room.

Beside the house there is an extensive terrace, formal garden with lawn and shrubs. Beyond there are paddocks and lawns with a backdrop of mature deciduous trees. Although the house neighbours, none are particularly close which gives the property complete seclusion and privacy.
Directions From Bishops Stortford proceed west on the A120 and proceed through the Little Hadham traffic lights, passing Howe Fencing on the right. After about 0.5 of a mile, take a left turn signposted to Westland and Wellpond Green. Follow this winding lane to a small ‘T’ junction and here turn left and take the second right turn. Pass a house called Westledon (where building works are being undertaken) and follow the road for about 0.5 of a mile and take the first left turn. Harley House will be found on the left after about 600m at the end this minor lane. From the A10 and Ware, from the Puckeridge roundabout, proceed through Standon and up the hill. Take the second right turn signposted to Westland and Wellpond Green, then as above.
