Situation

Drumhead is positioned on the edge of the conservation village of Cardross near Helensburgh, one of western Scotland's most desirable towns. On the Firth of Clyde, nearby Rhu Marina (6.5 miles) is one of Scotland's most popular marinas with excellent facilities and easy access to some of the worlds most testing sailing waters. Lot 1 comprises the main house and grounds of some 12 acres which include wonderful formal gardens, the walled garden, a paddock and the drive.

Lot 2 comprises a former stable block which has cleverly been converted into a substantial family home with flexible accommodation of nearly 2000sq ft.



Accommodation

Lot 1

Drumhead is a particularly handsome baronial mansion of considerable character. Formed over three levels under a slate roof it is characterised by its crow stepped gables and its cylindrical stair tower with candle snuffer roof. The original T-plan house, now the self contained east wing, dates from 1700 and was extended in 1766. Thought to date from around 1830-1835, the main house's decidedly vertical and Baronial proportions dominate. The property has been much improved over the last year with the installation of high quality double glazed windows.

It is a fascinating country house which has wonderful open views from the upper levels over the Firth of Clyde. It has changed ownership on remarkably few occasions. It was owned for the longest period by the Buchanans (later Buchanan-Dunlop). In 1954 it was bought by the family of the present owners.

Drumhead is category B listed and offers flexible accommodation of approximately 7360 sq ft:

A substantial storm door with stone pediment above leads to an almost circular entrance vestibule with flagstone floor and wall mounted horn coat hooks. Opening from here is the main reception hallway with a painted wooden fireplace, a staircase with under stair storage and doors to the office and inner hallway.

Off the inner hallway are various storage cupboards, a guest bedroom, access to the Old Wing and a back lobby off which is a back door to the courtyard, the former kitchen (presently a games room), a cold store, utility room, wc and staff staircase.

On the first floor are the dining room, kitchen, sitting room, drawing room and a bedroom with en suite bathroom.

The dining room is quite substantial and has a vaulted ceiling with ornate cornice and twin roses. It has a highly polished hardwood floor and a wood burning stove set into a stone fireplace. Off the dining room is the kitchen which is fitted in a country style with units at wall mounted and counter levels.

The sitting room has wonderful views over Drumhead's lawns and towards the River Clyde beyond. It has wonderful ceiling plasterwork, a frieze, a picture rail and a wood burning stove set into a charming wooden fireplace.

Like the sitting room, the drawing room has wonderful plasterwork and a frieze and even better views over the Firth of Clyde. It has an intricately carved bookcase and an open fire set into a white marble fireplace. Off the drawing room is a circular turret room which is presently used as a library.

On the second floor are four more bedrooms, one of which has an en suite shower room with fireplace, a family bathroom and access to the attic accommodation. One bedroom is worthy of particular note as it retains fitted furniture from the Arts and Crafts period which includes fitted wardrobes, tallboy drawers, dressing table and fitted seat which all co-ordinate with the panelling of the fireplace. A circular dressing room which occupies the turret also has similar fitted furniture and completes the accommodation on this level.

Old (East) Wing

An entrance porch leads to a small reception hallway off which are the kitchen and an en suite bedroom. Stairs lead up from the hallway to the first floor.

The kitchen is larger than one might expect, with plenty of space for a good-sized dining room table and chairs. It has modern units at wall mounted and counter levels.

Off the kitchen are a lobby, store and large utility room with plumbing for a washing machine, flagstone floor and doors to the courtyard and gardens.

On the first floor is a sitting room with pretty astragal windows, cornice and doorway to a second staircase to the second floor. A bedroom, family bathroom and store complete the accommodation on this level.

The second floor has two staircases from the first floor which is typical of a small tower house, with one staircase probably providing an alternative means of escape when under siege. This floor has two attic rooms presently used as an office and a studio.

Outbuildings

There is a small courtyard with pretty flagstones off which are a number of outbuildings/fuel stores.


Grounds

The grounds of Drumhead are magnificent. They comprise some 13 acres in all of which approx 12 acres are contained within Lot 1 and approx 0.8 acres are allocated to Lot 2.

Drumhead has two driveways. The main driveway is from the west and accessed from The Red Road. It meanders from the Red Road through open farmland, providing glimpses of the candle snuffer roof and the land gently rises as you get closer to the house. From the village of Cardross, just off Darleith Road, is the east drive which also leads to the main house.

Around the house is a substantial gravel sweep with plenty of space for a number of cars. The main formal gardens have splendid manicured level lawns which may at one time have been presented as a croquet lawn and tennis court. Around the garden in springtime daffodils abound and cherries blossom, whilst some magnificent mature trees provide privacy and protection from the prevailing south west winds. Also around the gardens are some charming shrubs and perennials providing seasonal colour. Hostas, heathers, peony roses and rare ferns feature. The gardens are bounded by numerous and varied Rhododendron bushes which provide a vivid display at this time of year.


To the north west of the main house is a magical sunken garden which at one time may have been a Victorian fernery. This remarkably peaceful spot is now more of a rockery with some wonderful alpine plants.

The walled garden is much larger than typical walled gardens of the period extending to some 1.1 acres or thereby. Now predominantly lawned its whinstone and sandstone walls are in reasonable condition and are featured as part of the category B listing.


Directions

From Glasgow take the M8 westbound to Junction 30, and follow signs for the Erskine Bridge. Cross the bridge and filter left (A82) at Dumbuck, signposted Crianlarich. Proceed along the A82 and turn left in Dumbarton on to the A814 towards Cardross and Helensburgh. Proceed through Cardross and head out of the village towards Helensburgh. After some 1.5 miles, and after passing the Crematorium, turn right up The Red Road. Continue up The Red Road and turn right at the gate house and proceed up the drive to Drumhead.

Alternatively, you can take a different road via the village of Cardross. Before leaving the village, turn right up Darleith Road (immediately after the pharmacy) signposted for The Chapel of St Mahew. Proceed up Darleith Road, passing the houses on the right hand side and after approx 0.5 miles, the entrance to Drumhead is on the left hand side. Proceed through the gates, passing the gatehouse, and past the Lodge is Drumhead.
