About the area
Cossington is a traditional village with a primary school, pub and village hall. It lies between the towns of Bridgwater and Street (bus services to each) and the M5 motorway, (junction 23), is less than 4 miles with good access north to Bristol & south to Taunton & the remainder of the West Country. Taunton has main line rail connections to London. There are excellent state and independent schools in the area including Millfield at Glastonbury and Street.

Cossington predates 1066 and was later probably part of the estates of Glastonbury Abbey. The exact origin of the Manor is not known but it certainly has a long and varied history and at one time was home to the Brent family who gave their name to the nearby landmark of Brent Knoll.

The house retains a handsome Stucco façade with many period details including elaborate weatherboarding, small paned windows, decorative plaster moulding and a castellated front entrance. Internally there is a magnificent galleried entrance hall with a stone staircase with wrought iron balustrades, excellent carpentry, beautiful plasterworks with ornate coving and central ceiling roses and working window shutters.

A panelled front door opens into the ENTRANCE PORCH with a tiled floor and glazed panelled double doors into the RECEPTION HALL with a tiled floor, splendid stone staircase with wrought iron balustrades and mahogany hand rail, and a fireplace with side alcoves with fitted cupboards. DRAWING ROOM a light room with floor to ceiling French windows with original shutters, gothic style pelmet and views to the church. An impressive entrance drive with stone pillars leads to the house which stands beside the ancient church of St. Mary of the Virgin which is believed to date back to the 12th century.

The carriage drive (partly shared by the adjoining house) leads to a turning circle immediately in front of the conservatory. It is flanked by a lawn with mature trees with well-stocked shrub borders and is bounded by the church to the south. The front of the house is adorned with mature roses and a deep paved terrace. The drive continues past the house and leads to the most delightful gardens, which must be viewed, to be fully appreciated.

The gardens have been planned, landscaped and maintained to exceptional standards and include terraces, lawns, herbaceous borders, flowerbeds and well-clipped hedges. One feature is a rose covered arbor built in the memory of the late Roger Elliot (the well known astrologer). One area of the garden includes a paved terrace, surrounded by a backdrop of woven living willow and beloved by travelling Shakespeare companies.
The garden in turn leads along gravelled paths flanked by rockeries and ponds to the SWIMMING POOL set in a large paved terrace being totally private and well sheltered with an adjacent timber PAVILION which includes a CLOAKROOM with wc and hand basin, SHOWER ROOM and CHANGING CUBICLE. The pavilion also has a bar servery with sink unit and fridge. Close by is an octagonal stone POOL HOUSE which houses the pool filtering system and provides storage for pool items.
Just beyond the pool is a HARD TENNIS COURT and to the sides run a VEGETABLE GARDEN with raised beds, espaliered fruit trees and cages for soft fruit.

Within the gardens is a GARAGE/STORE, RECYCLING AREA and GREENHOUSE.

The sale of the property includes the fitted carpets, light fittings, curtains and blinds and pool servicing equipment. Other items are available by negotiation.

The Manor has used by the present owners as an important part of the village and has been the setting for annual concerts and other events for which it is admirably suited.
