Balmerino is a charming picturesque coastal village situated on the north coast of Fife and is an official conservation area. Balmerino is best known for its Abbey where Mary Queen of Scots spent a relaxing two days on her way to St Andrews in 1565. This 13th century Cistercian monastery, now mostly in ruins, was considered a place of refuge and tranquillity during the turbulent middle ages.
Access to Bottomcraig by rail, road and air is excellent. Leuchars railway station, 6 miles east, is on the main Aberdeen to London line and provides a fast link to Dundee and Edinburgh. Dundee Airport is only 9 miles away from here there are regular daily flights to London Stanstead Airport. Edinburgh Airport with its frequent services to London and an increasing variety of both domestic and international services is only about 1 hour away. There is a dual carriageway and motorway connection to Edinburgh from Glenrothes, 16 miles away.
Bottomcraig is only 10 miles from St Andrews which is renowned around the world as the home of golf. There are now six golf courses at St Andrews including the Old Course, a regular host to the Open Championship. There are many other fine golf courses in the area including Drumoig and St Michaels, both just inland, and Elie, Crail, Charleston, Kilconquhar, Leven and Lundin Links on the coast. The Open Championship course at Carnoustie is only about 30 minutes' drive to the north.
As well as being famous for golf, St. Andrews is well known for its University which is one of the oldest in Britain and for the Byre Theatre. It provides good state schooling at Madras College and private co-educational schooling at St. Leonards. There are other public schools near Perth including Glenalmond, Strathallan, Kilgraston and Craigclowan while Dundee High School is also within easy reach. St. Andrews has a good range of shops and supermarkets. Cupar, 8 miles to the south, is a very popular market town.
