Full description

Tenure: Freehold

Allerdale Court Hotel is a lovely Georgian property situated in the old Market Place in the centre of this delightful Cumbrian market town. Built in the 1730s, the hotel was originally four separate properties at the front and eight further cottages to the rear. Indeed, the most famous mutineer of all time, Fletcher Christian, after seeing his crewmates slain by Tahitian natives, is reputed to have escaped on a ship with one Captain Folger and returned to one of the houses which now form Allerdale Court. All of the cottages and houses were brought together in 1972 to form Allerdale Court, a lovely spacious property now serving locals and visitors alike.

Cockermouth is renowned as the birthplace of William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy. The house known as Wordsworth House still stands at the other end of the town. A bright and cheerful market town, it stands on the River Cocker and is home to Jennings Brewery. However, the delights of the Lake District National Park and particularly Lorton Valley are only a short distance away. To the west lies the Georgian ports of Whitehaven and Workington while further south is Muncaster and Ravenglass with its delightful light railway running to Eskdale, known the world over as L'al Ratty.

The present owner acquired Allerdale Court in 1997 and immediately set about a comprehensive programme of refurbishment which completely transformed the hotel. Indeed, over the last year extensive further upgrading has taken place which has established 7 particularly high quality executive bedrooms as well as a complete refurbishment of the bar and ''Carlins Bistro'' in to a contemporary style in such a lovely way that it complements the many original features. Turnover has increased significantly with Allerdale Court particularly benefitting from mid-week corporate trade from industry on the west coast of Cumbria. This is augmented by weekend leisure breaks and much local dining trade. Having enjoyed a profitable business in a picturesque market town, the owner now wishes to retire.
